JESUS THE SCAPEGOAT

Welcome back dear saints and others to our study of The Trail of Blood from Heaven before the foundation of the world to the Garden of Eden, to Cain and Abel, to Noah, to Abraham, and now to Moses. I will be picking up once again with The Day of Atonement details which are a prophetic image of our redemption and the unblemished Lamb of God blotting out the sin of all who will receive eternally. Now, let’s plunge into our study.
Now let us look at this scapegoat. Remember, God had Aaron take two kid goats of the congregation and cast lots upon them; and one became the sin offering, and the other the scapegoat. Remember, all of these represent Jesus the Messiah and look forward to the finished work He would do at His coming.
Leviticus 16:10 (KJV)
10 But the goat, on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat, shall be presented alive before the LORD, to make an atonement with him, and to let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness.
A scapegoat is an innocent one who takes the blame and punishment for another. Jesus is our scapegoat. It seems that the wilderness here in the case of Jesus is Hell. All of our sins were laid on Jesus at the Cross, He was made sin for us.
Leviticus 16:20-22 (KJV)
20 And when he hath made an end of reconciling the holy place, and the tabernacle of the congregation, and the altar, he shall bring the live goat:
21 And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness:
22 And the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto a land not inhabited: and he shall let go the goat in the wilderness.
Again, the scapegoat is symbolic of Jesus. The word “scape” means to escape. [3] Oh, by the blood of Christ, we escape the consequences of sin! The scapegoat is led by a fit man into the wilderness, just as Jesus was led by a fit man to Golgotha.
Matthew 27:32 (KJV)
32 And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross. [2]
Aaron laid his hands upon the head of the scapegoat before he led him into the wilderness and put all the iniquities of the congregation upon him, just as the Father laid all of our iniquities on Jesus.
Isaiah 53:6 (KJV)
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. [2]
Jesus went to Calvary, Golgotha, a place not inhabited; and there He died for your sin and mine. Oh, thank you Jesus!
TAKE HOME:
- Jesus is and was our scapegoat, He was innocent, we were not, but He joyfully endured the Cross for our sakes.
- The Father laid all the sins of the people (past, present, future) on Jesus for our sake. Those who will receive Him as Lord are cleansed as if they never sinned.
- Jesus indeed went into the wilderness of Hell but due to the innocent Blood and the confession of His mouth He was found innocent, and all was restored.
