Greetings dear saints of God and others and welcome back to this exciting and revelatory study of The Trail of Blood from before the foundation of the world to the Mercy Seat of Heaven. Now, let’s get back on the trail.
I left off last week talking about the sin of Achan, and the result as described in the book of Joshua. I will pick up that account again today because it gives insight to the horrific nature of sin. One of the reasons that many sins were punished by stoning to death under the Law was to highlight how serious sin is and its effect on others. We have noticed that the sin of Achan had a terrible effect on the family. On the other side of the coin, righteousness will affect the family as in the case of Noah, Abraham and Lot.
The sin of Achan resulted in other persons being killed in combat that would not have died otherwise. The giving of seed to Molech involves the death of innocent life, the life of some of the most vulnerable in society. Satanic worship results in oppressions and possessions. This will have a terribly destructive effect on that person, those close to them, and even society. It was God’s original intent and remains that what happens in the earth is to bring glory (a manifestation of His goodness) to God. When that happens, our lives are made glorious.
Psalms 8:1 (KJV)
1 O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.
The glory of Jehovah, Adoni is above all! When all is said and done, the glory of God is the manifested goodness of God. His goodness is evident to all. Now let us turn our attention back to the example of Achan. This account is at the time when the children of Israel have come across the river Jordan to occupy the Promised Land. Before the battle for Jericho, they are given certain commands of God which are found in Joshua 6:17-24. With the exception of Rahab, the harlot and her family, they were to destroy all the people and animals. All of the silver, gold, brass, and iron were to be set aside for the Lord and put into the treasury of the LORD (Joshua 6:19 [KJV]). Unknown to Joshua, Achan took of the things to be consecrated to the Lord. Now, they went out to battle with a much smaller (than Jericho) city/state and were routed. Joshua seeks the Lord, but the Lord tells him in so many words, get up; there is sin in the camp. Find it and get rid of it.
Joshua 7:10-11 (KJV)
10 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face?
11 Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff.
They then found that Achan was the thief, and he now stands before Joshua.
Joshua 7:19-26 (KJV)
19 And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the LORD God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me.
20 And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:
21 When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.
22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.
23 And they took them out of the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the LORD.
24 And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them unto the valley of Achor.
25 And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? the LORD shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones.
26 And they raised over him a great heap of stones unto this day. So the LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger. Wherefore the name of that place was called, The valley of Achor, unto this day.
Did you hear the confession of sin in the preceding passage? Reminded me of this verse.
1 John 1:9 (ESV)
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
It seems to me that although there was no Blood of The Lamb to expunge this sin, they gained entrance by faith into the Bosom of Abraham.
TAKE HOME:
- Stoning to death was how certain sins were removed under the Old Covenant. Jesus is the Stone, still the One who removes sin.
- Sin never affects only the sinner.
- If we will confess our sin like Achan God is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us.
Lord willing, I will resume right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
