SIN CORRUPTS THE CAMP

Greetings dear saints of God and others and welcome back to this exciting and revelatory study of The Trail of Blood from before the foundation of the world to the Mercy Seat of Heaven. Now, let’s get back on the trail. I am going to once again pickup with the sin of Achan at Jericho for it is such a clear example. Don’t be fooled by it being an “Old Testament” example, it is as true today as then, God does not change.
You will recall that Israel defeated Jericho with minimal effort and no loss of life yet when then went up against a much smaller foe they lost thirty-six lives. Joshua went before the Lord and the Lord told him there was sin in the camp that allowed entry to the curse, to death. Achan was found to be the culprit, and I will pick up again with the following passage.
Joshua 7:19-21 (KJV)
19 And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the LORD God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me.
20 And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:
21 When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.
I had pointed out earlier in this study of stoning to death that perhaps what we see as a horrific way to die was actually a picture of The Stone being broken for all of our sin. That is stoning combined with a repentant confession that actually provided mercy and entry into the Bosom of Abraham.
1 John 1:9 (ESV)
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Since God never changes is this not true for them but true for us? No, it has been true for all men for all time. It must come from the heart and be spoken in faith, fully persuaded of the mercy of God.
In the Joshua chapter seven passage, Achan admits his sin and tells him what he has done; and then he repents. This is the process with animal sacrifice. The sins were confessed over the animal then it was sacrificed. In this case, the sin was confessed and then the flesh was destroyed with stoning. I would submit that as gruesome as this may sound to our twenty-first century minds, this may well be a very merciful act. His own blood, of course, could not redeem him; but it could atone until the blameless blood was shed. You may say that with animal sacrifice, the animal is blameless; but Achan was not blameless. That is a point well taken. However, in the eyes of God he was blameless, it was credited to him for righteousness like father Abraham.
Today, when we sin, if we confess the sin, the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all unrighteousness. That blood cleansed him as well, for I submit that Achan and his family entered the bosom of Abraham waiting for that day by faith, the confession of their mouth and the coming Blood of the Lamb. That day is the day that Jesus took sin upon Himself and shed His blood on the tree. Achan confessed his sin, his flesh was broken, he shed blood, and the sin was atoned for a season. The Rock would pay the ultimate price. He paid the short-term price. When I pickup tomorrow we will be talking about Jesus.
TAKE HOME:
- As in the case of Achan, the curse causeless (Proverbs 26:2) does not alight.
- Sin is contagious, it will infect an individual, a family, a community, a nation.
- Sin must be completely removed to stop the spread and a increasing of the curse it loses. The Blood of Jesus does that but they had mercy in the Old Covenant until Jesus could come.
Lord willing, I will resume right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
