Welcome back to our study of 3rd John dear brothers and sisters in Christ and any others that are joining with us. The Apostle John is one of the original twelve, commonly referred to as the Apostle of love and he is the only one to not die a violent death. I wonder if there is a connection there. Without further ado let’s move to our text and see what the Lord has for us.
3 John 1:1-5 (NKJV)
1 The Elder, To the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth:
2 Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.
3 For I rejoiced greatly when brethren came and testified of the truth that is in you, just as you walk in the truth.
4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
5 Beloved, you do faithfully whatever you do for the brethren and for strangers,
Have you noticed that this passage is all about “the truth”? What about your life and mine? When the brethren came to the Apostle John and reported on their visit with the beloved Gaius it had to do with his walk with the Lord. Apparently their first concern and they knew it would be John’s was how is the beloved Gaius doing with the Truth. What predominates our conversations with those who are beloved in our lives or when we hear a report concerning one of our beloved ones? I think there is much to learn here. Dear ones there is nothing more important than the Truth we know and that we walk in it, live it.
As we move into verse four, we find the Apostle of love not only rejoicing but expressing great joy at this news concerning Gaius. He is telling Gaius how excited, how pleased he was to hear that he knows and does the Truth. As I mentioned before, it would appear that Gaius is a spiritual son of the Apostle John, but I would not go to war over the possibility that he is a natural son. Doesn’t it just cause your heart to leap with thanksgiving and joy to hear that a spiritual or natural son or daughter have the Truth within and are walking it out, living it out. Now, let’s move forward.
3 John 1:5-8 (ESV)
5 Beloved, it is a faithful thing you do in all your efforts for these brothers, strangers as they are,
6 who testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their journey in a manner worthy of God.
7 For they have gone out for the sake of the name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles.
8 Therefore we ought to support people like these, that we may be fellow workers for the truth.
As we enter this fifth verse, we find the Apostle addressing Gaius as “beloved” instead of by his name indicating a special relationship. John commends Gaius for his faithfulness to take care of the brothers they know and those they do not know. The word “stranger” in verse five can refer to one previously unknown, one who is outside the house of faith, or one in the house of faith but not known previously. From context it would seem that it is referring to a believer that was previously unknown to them (Gaius). It is also apparent that they are traveling evangelists. We see in the very next verse that the brothers and the strangers are testifying before the Church of the faithfulness of this man Gaius.
TAKE HOME:
- Do we look for and rejoice over the Truth that our brethren know and walk in.
- Are we filled with joy to hear of and watch our spiritual and natural children walk out the Truth?
- Are we faithful, generous, to our support of those who the Lord brings to us and are going out with this glorious gospel?
Lord willing, I will resume right here next Friday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
