WHAT ABOUT YOUR THOUGHTS

Greetings dear saints and others. Welcome to the third week of our Bible Study of 3rd John. Last week we dealt with most of verse two which I will finish today and move forward. Without further ado lets delve into our Scripture.
3 John 1:1-4 (ESV)
1 The elder to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth.
2 Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul.
3 For I rejoiced greatly when the brothers came and testified to your truth, as indeed you are walking in the truth.
4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.
We covered the second verse pretty well last Friday but there is still a little work to do concerning it. In the context of the full counsel of Scripture what would it mean for all to go well? Consider the following two Scriptures.
Deuteronomy 4:40 (ESV)
40 Therefore you shall keep his statutes and his commandments, which I command you today, that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land that the LORD your God is giving you for all time.”
Deuteronomy 28:1-2 (ESV)
1 “And if you faithfully obey the voice of the LORD your God, being careful to do all his commandments that I command you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth.
2 And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of the LORD your God.
If you read down through verse fourteen you find nothing but prosperity of every kind. It is the same for us today; the Lord does not change. I now want us to focus in on the terminal portion of verse two “as it goes well with your soul”. Our soul is the God breathed part of us which is a combination of our spirit man and our soul man. Focusing on the soul, it is comprised of our mind, will, emotions, intellect, and deepest thoughts (subconscious). It is out of our thought life that our lives take shape. What would be a prosperous thought life? One in line with the Word of God, the thoughts of God. Let’s look at a few verses demonstrating that the thoughts of our mind or soul through our words produce our lives.
Proverbs 4:23-24 (ESV)
23 Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.
24 Put away from you crooked speech, and put devious talk far from you.
Out of our heart, our thoughts, by way of speech our life springs forth be it good or bad. Verse twenty-four is there is warn us away from talk contrary to the Kingdom of God.
Matthew 12:35 (ESV)
35 The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil.
Jesus tells us plainly that we have what we think and say whether it be good or bad. Do you think it is worth our while to guard our thoughts and be sure they are the same as God’s thoughts? The next verse tells us that we can think and reap the Devils thoughts or Heavens thoughts.
Galatians 6:7 (ESV)
7 Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.
TAKE HOME:
- Obedience to the Word of God is the key to wealth and health. If these are not present, what is the answer?
- Are we guarding our thought life casting away all perverse and devious thoughts aborting the words that would follow.
- We reap what we sow.
