NO ONE TO INTERCEDE

Greetings dear friends and fellow saints in the Kingdom of God and welcome back to this enlightening and empowering study of the Book of Isaiah. The featured picture is a beautiful morning sky last winter at our home here in San Antonio. Now, let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text reading aloud, yes, out loud.

Isaiah 59:16-19 (NASB)

16 And He saw that there was no man, And was astonished that there was no one to intercede; Then His own arm brought salvation to Him, And His righteousness upheld Him.

17 He put on righteousness like a breastplate, And a helmet of salvation on His head; And He put on garments of vengeance for clothing And wrapped Himself with zeal as a mantle.

18 According to their deeds, so He will repay, Wrath to His adversaries, recompense to His enemies; To the coastlands He will make recompense.

19 So they will fear the name of the LORD from the west And His glory from the rising of the sun, For He will come like a rushing stream Which the wind of the LORD drives.

Today let’s pick up with verse sixteen again and look at it in the Message Bible for increased clarity.

Isaiah 59:16 (MSG)

16 He couldn’t believe what he saw: not a soul around to correct this awful situation. So he did it himself, took on the work of Salvation, fueled by his own Righteousness.

I hope we can all see the Messiah in this verse and in the passages that are to follow. The people of God are in this mess by rejecting God and so He is bringing a Redeemer, Christ Jesus, on the scene, but as we know they rejected Him as well. As we go into verse seventeen it makes one to think we are in the New Testament Book of Ephesians. Of course, I am talking about the full armor of God.

Ephesians 6:14-18 (NASB)

14 Stand firm therefore, HAVING GIRDED YOUR LOINS WITH TRUTH, and HAVING PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS,

15 and having shod YOUR FEET WITH THE PREPARATION OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE;

16 in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

17 And take THE HELMET OF SALVATION, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

18 With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints,

Verse seventeen of our primary text speaks of Jesus, the Messiah, putting on “righteousness like a breastplate”. The Ephesians text above speaks of us putting on the breastplate of righteousness. In the Isaiah text it was up to the Messiah to put on righteousness and in the Ephesians text it is up to us to put on righteousness. The Holy Spirit through the Apostle Paul is using the symbolism of a Roman soldier’s armor to describe and explain the armor of God. The breastplate protects the upper body of the soldier. The primary organ being protected is the heart, the physical heart. In the spirit realm however, we are talking about our soul especially our thought life, our mind. Upon salvation we are made righteous in Christ Jesus. We are made righteous with His righteousness. We are given right standing with the Father and citizenship in the Kingdom of God.

2 Corinthians 5:21 (NASB)

21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Colossians 1:13-14 (NASB)

13 For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son,

14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Isn’t our God just so wonderful.
