HOLY, HARMLESS, UNDEFILED, SEPARATE
Tuesday – December 19, 2017

Greetings and welcome back to this very informative Bible Study taken from the Book of Hebrews. God is so good to give us His Word. We do not have to guess what He has said, who He is, or who we are. We can know exactly who we are and what our present and future is with Him and without Him. Let me give a quick little hint, you want nothing to do with being without Him. Well, let’s jump right back into our primary text and discussion.
Hebrews 7:26-28 (KJV)
26 For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;
27 Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.
28 For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore.
I left off yesterday with a discussion of God’s command for us to be holy. We saw from our text that Jesus our High Priest is holy and were reminded that we are to be holy as well. Being holy is a complete unadulterated separation to God. This stuff is not just interesting information about God or our High Priest but it is pertinent and essential to our relationship with God and with others. It has everything to do with our success in the Kingdom of God. Our failure is God’s failure, our success is God’s success. God has no authority to do anything in the earth without a man to work with and through. God is not in control of our lives or the events of the earth. We are freewill creations and we choose whether it be good or bad, He makes us do nothing. Right off the bat in the Garden God gave his authority (dominion) to mankind and the Blessing to back it up so long as they were obedient to His Word. Man lost the Blessing and gave his authority to the devil on the Day of Sin, however, The Word (Jesus) came and took it back. We choose our thoughts, our words, and our actions. We choose to serve God or Satan. God is in control of the physical and spiritual laws that govern all things.
Hebrews 1:3 (KJV)
3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; (Bold added by Dr. Wood)
Jesus, our High Priest, is holy being pure, unblemished, free of all sin. We are to be the same. Just because we sinned before and after salvation does not mean we cannot be holy, pure, and unblemished going forward just like Jesus before the Father. Next in our text we come to a very interesting word and that is the word “harmless”. As we look at the text of Hebrews 7:26 and we look at the words “holy, harmless, undefiled, separate” we can quickly see that the word “holy” by itself really encompasses the other three. A holy person is harmless, undefiled with sin, and stays separate from sinners. So, let’s focus down on this word “harmless”. Harmless according to The Complete Word Study Dictionary: New Testament means to be void of evil, blameless before God, without duplicity, without guile, without admixture, innocent, good, benevolent, gentle, and mellow. A person who practices holiness is harmless to those around them. The antonyms for harmless are malevolent (wicked), bad, evil, and worthless. Obviously, all of these antonyms of harmless are harmful to others and the Kingdom of God.
An undefiled person is free of the contamination of the world, and brother and sister that is an all-day job. Undefiled also means to be unalloyed. An alloy is a blend of things generally metals. For example, bronze is a combination or alloy of copper and tin. Brass is an alloy or copper and zinc. Does the tree of the knowledge of good and evil come to mind or the mixing of the holy with the profane? So, as you may have already guessed or know the word unalloyed means to be pure, absolute, complete, unadulterated, undiminished, or undiluted. The antonym is to be partial. Unfortunately, alloy describes much of the Church. People have their God time and then they have the rest of their daily life. This is an alloyed life and is unholy, defiled, and generally unproductive personally or for the Kingdom of God. There are folks in the world who have the appearance of doing well, however do not be deceived, see what David wrote, what the Lord revealed to him.
Psalm 73:12,17 (KJV)
12 Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches.
17 Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end.
That is not to say we are not to prosper and increase in riches, we certainly are and the failure to prosper is sin. The people of the Kingdom of God should be making the people of the world, the devils system, look like paupers. Why aren’t we? We are not unalloyed but an alloy. As we end today we see that our High Priest Jesus is separate from sinners and thus so are we to be separate from sinners. That does not mean we cannot work or eat with sinners, however it does mean that we are not to be partakers in their lifestyle. After all, Jesus ate with sinners and the religious people got really upset. You can’t be an influence on anyone with whom you have no contact. The twenty-sixth verse of our text ends with “and made higher than the heavens:” Well guess who else is been made higher than the heavens? You and me brother and sister!
Ephesians 2:6 (KJV)
6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
Until our next publication, I speak blessing into your life right now, receive it in the name of Jesus, confess it, and walk it out with thanksgiving.
Numbers 6:24-26 (GW)
24 The LORD will bless you and watch over you.
25 The LORD will smile on you and be kind to you.
26 The LORD will look on you with favor and give you peace.’
