ABRAHAM
Monday – April 16, 2018, Iyar 1, 5778

Greetings and welcome back to this wonderful faith building Bible Study from the Book of Hebrews. Hebrews is the Book of faith and we are in what is commonly referred to as the faith chapter of the Bible like 1 Corinthians 13 is commonly referred to as the love chapter of the Bible. Today I will be talking about the faith of Abraham, the father of us all. Our picture today reveals the route of Abraham’s travels from Ur to Haran and to Canaan. Now let’s read aloud our primary text.
Hebrews 11:8-10 (KJV)
8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.
9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:
10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
It is my goal and I pray it is your goal to develop a faith that does not flinch or even think about flinching in the face of any circumstance or words spoken. Jesus had an unwavering faith and He said that we could and were in fact commanded to do as He did. Let’s go back to Genesis and pick up this wonderful account of the life of Abraham without which we would not have Jesus.
Genesis 11:31 (KJV)
31 And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son’s son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there.
Abram’s (later renamed by God, Abraham) father Terah took Abram and others and traveled to Haran on the way to Canaan. Look at the map and tell me if you think that was the most efficient route to Canaan from Ur of the Chaldees. I realize they may not have wanted to travel across the Arabian Desert and traveled along the Euphrates River but it is an open question as to why they got hung up in Haran. However, when Abram’s father Terah dies he moves on to Canaan but still not fully in the will of God.
Genesis 12:1 (KJV)
1 Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee:
So, as we put this together it would seem that God spoke to Abram in Ur and commanded him to leave everyone and everything and go to a land He would show Abram. Apparently, in the passage of some space of time Abram understood that land to be the land of Canaan. When Terah dies they move to Canaan but Abram takes Lot with him in disobedience to God. Taking people with us that God did not sanction will delay or perhaps completely derail our destiny. Abram knew from the get go they were headed to Canaan. Abram is seventy-five when they leave Haran for Canaan.
Genesis 12:1-3 (KJV)
1 Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee:
2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:
3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
It seems that God spoke to Abram years earlier while still in Ur of the Chaldees, and the preceding verses are the promises that God makes to Abram. Abram did leave Ur but he did not leave his kindred and his father’s house. Partial obedience, but God is merciful and patient. Over the next twenty-four years God works with Abram to build his faith to bring forth the son of promise (Isaac) so God could send His Son of promise (Jesus). God needed to bring the faith of Abram along until they could enter into a Blood Covenant, the Blood Covenant that would give God the legal standing to come into the earth and pay the price of sin. We will continue with Abram tomorrow but until then I want to point out that Abraham is one hundred and seventy-five when he dies. He is seventy-five when he finally leaves to enter Canaan, so there is a one-hundred-year span. One hundred is the number of God’s election of Grace and Children of Promise.
Until our next publication, I speak this Scriptural prayer for your life right now, receive it in the name of Jesus, confess it, and walk it out with thanksgiving.
2 Peter 1:2-4 (KJV)
2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
