THE SAFETY OF SALVATION

Greetings and welcome to Awake, Arise, and Triumph Ministries and the current two-part teaching on “conscience”. I think we all intuitively have some understanding of what I am talking about. In a general sense it is the knowledge between right and wrong. Here is the question, how do we gain that knowledge. Is this knowledge between good and evil, knowing right and wrong, God given to all peoples, only to God’s people, or is it learned?
Yesterday I talked about the difference between conscience and conviction. Conviction is when light, revealed Word of God, is applied to a thing by others (hopefully led of the Spirit) or by the Holy Spirit. Usually, the Holy Spirit will bring conviction for the purpose of causing us to repent followed by righteous behavior. If we will not listen, He loves us enough to have others illuminate it. What do you say we become more sensitive to the leadership of the Holy Spirit, so other people don’t have to be involved. This conviction, whether it be from outside or the Holy Spirit inside, causes a disturbance of our conscience which is a part of our soul. Our conscience can also be disturbed when we violate what we know to be wrong and this brings conviction. I think we can see somewhat of a two-way street here. Our conscience is disturbed when we violate what we know, and the conviction is the knowing of wrong. We become aware of wrong and then the knowledge that we need to correct the wrong. This is clear in the following account.
John 8:9 (KJV)
9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
This is the account of the woman taken in adultery and cast down before Jesus by the scribes and Pharisees. The motive of these men was to trick Jesus into a violation of the Law of Moses. The Law of Mosed (God) demanded she be stoned. This is a form of the Law of Sin and Death. The One who would take away that Law, the Law of Sin and Death, stood among them (Romans 8:2). When Jesus told them that any among them who was without sin could cast the first stone their consciences were pricked followed by conviction and they walked away.
Let’s take a look at the following passage and see the state of man before the coming, or return, of the Holy Spirit and after.
Jeremiah 31:31-34 (KJV)
31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:
33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
The New Covenant is the Blood of Jesus. This is available from Resurrection Day to the end of the age. All of us are included in verse 31 with the phrase house of Israel and house of Judah. We see in verse 34 that before the indwelling Holy Spirit (at salvation) what bothered our conscience depended on our knowledge, what others taught us. In verse 33 we see that with the indwelling Holy Spirit received at salvation He will write His laws on the quickened spirit man (inward parts) and our soul (probably the subconscious). A huge problem today is that the enemy of our souls has convinced those outside the Kingdom of God that there are no absolutes. Unfortunately, this doctrine of demons seems to have leaked into the Church as well.
A disturbance of the conscience comes when we violate what we believe to be wrong. It may or may not be wrong according to Scripture, but we believe it to be wrong and therefore our conscience will bother us and we will be convicted. The Christian can go to Scripture, go to God, the Holy Spirit, for guidance. The more we renew our minds to Holy Scripture our conscience will be increasingly aligned with the will of God. This explains at least in part why a person may be doing what is obviously contrary to God’s will and have a clear conscience. Perhaps you have looked at those advocating abortion and the gay agenda to mention two and wonder how they can believe these things are good. If you believe it is right and not wrong there will be no conviction, no disturbance of the conscience.
TAKE HOME:
- A violation of light, what we believe to be right (morally and ethically right), brings a disturbance to our conscience and subsequently conviction.
- Conviction can also come from others and/or the Holy Spirit when we are contemplating wrong or have done wrong. This is wrong according to the Word of God and within our understanding.
- Our conscience is kept clear or undisturbed by not violating what we know to be right. This is not as black and white as sit may seem and the Apostle Paul has an extensive discussion about that in 1st Corinthians chapter eight and eating meat sacrificed to idols.
Lord willing, I will return with a new revelation, new light from the Throne tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
