LOOSE LIPS ARE RAMPANT WICKEDNESS

Greetings precious saints of God and welcome to this ongoing study of the Bible Book of James. Have you come with ears to hear and eyes to see? Are you looking for information or revelation, light, to guide your life? It seems to me that this Book is among those that are straight forward and practical at first reading, studying. Now, let’s go ahead into our text for today.
James 1:21-24 (ESV)
21 Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror.
24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.
Yesterday we took to heart the command of God to spend more time listening than speaking and to be very slow to anger. In todays world there is no shortage of words being thrown at our ears. Jesus and the Apostle Paul told us to be careful what we hear. Then immediately we are told that little hearing, many words, and wrath lead directly to filthiness, and rampant wickedness. This is what it looks like in the eyes, the judgment of God, the only eyes and judgment that count when all is said and done. Let’s get serious with this folks!
Next, we find in verse twenty-one of our text the instruction to receive in all humility the Word of God which is our salvation. The Word of God is to transform our thinking to be like the Lord and brings the full benefits of salvation. The Word of God is to displace and forever replace the words, the ways of the world. Did you notice the use of the term “engrafted word”? This word was not a part of our fallen nature but is to become a permanent part of our new nature in Christ Jesus. Eventually all of the words of the world will be pruned away and replaced with the Words of God. The Words of God are the thoughts and ways of God. The words of the world are the thoughts and ways of Satan. Which ones do you want to be known by? The word “souls” in our text is referring to the immaterial or spiritual part of us not the physical body.
This brings us to the twenty-second verse which most people can quote but it seems they are not doing. Interesting dichotomy. Christians will say we are to do the Word, and many say they are doing the Word but where is the fruit?

To be a doer of the Word of God means you are living the Word as written and bearing the fruit, the manifestation of the Word. We are all guilty of hearing the Word of God but then failing to change making it a part of our thinking and doing. We listen to a good sermon perhaps, hear some things that impact us for the moment. Then we went home with no thought of what needs to be done to come in line with what we just heard. The says that is self-deception.
TAKE HOME:
- God calls loose lips, deaf ears, and swiftness to anger filthy and rampant wickedness, let us call it the same.
- God says to put our efforts to engrafting His Word which saves our souls.
- Hearing the Word of God without doing the Word of God is self-deception.
