A FORGETFUL HEARER

Greetings precious saints of God and welcome to this ongoing study of the Bible Book of James. Have you come with ears to hear and eyes to see? Are you looking for information or revelation, light, to guide your life? It seems to me that this Book is among those that are straight forward and practical at first reading, studying. Now, let’s go ahead into our text for today.
James 1:22-24 (ESV)
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror.
24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.
To hear the Word of God and not act upon what we have heard sound a lot like willful ignorance to me. The Apostle Peter speaks of this in his second epistle.
2 Peter 3:5 (KJV)
5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
Peter is talking about people rejecting the Truth of creation, the Truth of the Word of God, of salvation. This is willful and it goes on in the body of Christ big time. One may have reasons at the Judgment, but they will have no acceptable excuse.
Romans 1:20-22 (KJV)
20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
Although this passage is primarily speaking to the unsaved it applies to saints as well. The body of Christ is rampant with sacred cows (get my book “Sacred Cows Among The Ekklesia”) which are the traditions of men and the doctrines of demons. These leave the Christian in darkness, self-deception, and devoid of the promises and Power of God. Lot’s of talk, idle words, and no fruit. This failure to change to come in line with the Word of God is a rejection of Truth, knowledge of God, His thoughts and ways.
Hosea 4:6 (KJV)
6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.
Back to James. The Holy Spirit, through the human author James gives an example of a person looking in a mirror, seeing certain things but walking away and never correcting what they saw. Perhaps their hair need to be combed but they didn’t comb it. In the spiritual realm perhaps, they saw something about their beliefs that needed changing but decided to keep the sacred cow. Willful ignorance, rejection of Truth, a bad place to take. It is a choice. I forgot just won’t cut it when we stand before the Lord. Or we might say “well I trusted the Pastor”. Won’t cut it either.
TAKE HOME:
- We must determine that we are people with ears to hear and when we hear a need to change, we will with the help of the Holy Spirit change.
- We look into the Word of God with the very intent of finding His thoughts and ways and doing them. We do not look to confirm our filters and biases, or sacred cows but to be more like Him.
- Let’s ask ourselves, what manner of person am I, am I more like my Lord or more like Satan?
