JESUS KING AND PRIEST

NOT BY BIRTH – BY APPOINTMENT

Greetings to one and all and welcome to this study of Jesus as King and Priest. The photo I have associated with this teaching is AI generated and you will recognize symbols of kings and priests. A few weeks ago, a wonderful man of God asked about the issue of Jesus’ Kingship and Priesthood since He was not of the tribe of Levi. No problem with being King since He is of the tribe of Judah, the lineage of kings from David to Jesus.

Genesis 49:10 (KJV)

10 The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.

The scepter is a symbol of kingly authority and in an autocracy the king is the lawgiver. The word Shiloh is an epithet of the Messiah meaning to be tranquil, secure or successful, be happy, prosper, be in safety according to Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. Looks like salvation don’t you think? The Messiah is gathering Jew and Gentile alike to Himself into what is called the Church or the body of Christ.

God through Moses ordained that the priests would be of the tribe of Levi. Moses is of the Tribe of Levi so of course so is his brother Aaron the first High Priest.

Exodus 2:1-2 (KJV)

1 And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi.

2 And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months.

As you continue to read you find this is the start of the account of the birth of Moses in Egypt. In the following passage we God directing Moses to establish Levi as the priestly tribe. Not all the men of the tribe of Levi were High Priest or a priest, but they all served God in the Tabernacle and later the Temple.

Exodus 28:1-2 (KJV)

1 And take thou unto thee Aaron thy brother, and his sons with him, from among the children of Israel, that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office, even Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s sons.

2 And thou shalt make holy garments for Aaron thy brother for glory and for beauty.

Melchizedek (king of righteousness) who was king of Salem (king of peace) who was also priest to the Most High God as the type and shadow of Jesus, the Messiah, to come.

Genesis 14:18 (KJV)

18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.

We see in the following passage that God, the Father, appointed Jesus as Priest as He had Aaron centuries earlier.

Hebrews 5:4-6 (KJV)

4 And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.

5 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.

6 As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

There is no recorded genealogy for Melchisedec in the Scripture. Melchisedec as some suppose is not a preincarnate appearance of Christ but was a human person of his time who was a type and shadow of The Priest and King to come, Christ Jesus. Melchisedec had a mother and father. We do not have any other examples of anyone in Scripture who were both King and Priest. Those offices were separated by God until Christ and now us. We dear ones are also kings and priests in the Kingdom of God. Jesus was appointed High Priest by the Father just as God had ordained Melchisedek Priest of the Most High God. The word “order” in Hebrews 5:6 means arrangement. Jesus had the same arrangement as Melchisedek, that is being ordained of God both King and Priest. Since we are not told the beginning or end of Melchisedek there is the since of being eternal, but he was not unlike King and High Priest Jesus who is eternal.

One further point you may find interesting before I finish today is that Mary was of the tribe of Levi and Joseph was of the tribe of Judah.

Luke 1:5 (KJV)

5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

Luke 1:36 (KJV)

36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

The Virgin Mary is a cousin of Elisabeth and therefore also a Levite. This would give Jesus legal claim to the Priesthood as a Levite and to Kingship through Joseph of the tribe of Judah.

TAKE HOME:

Jesus our Savior is King of the Kingdom of God and He is High Priest of this Kingdom.
Jesus was restored as God at the Resurrection, made King of the Kingdom and High Priest. Meditate Hebrew chapters one and five. He is also King and Priest by earthly genealogy. In addition Jesus stepped into the same arrangement as Melchisedek of old.
Likewise, like Jesus, we also are kings and priests under Jesus in the earth.

As the Lord wills, I will have new revelation tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
