Greetings dear brothers and sisters in Christ, and welcome to this ongoing study of “Father Abraham”.
Today is Memorial Day. Memorial Day was initiated to honor those who paid the ultimate price in their service of this country. In more recent times it has become a day when we honor all that have gone before us. So, let us be sure to honor in remembrance and thanksgiving to God those who gave their lives in the service to this country. Also let us remember our personal loved ones who have gone on with our love, gratitude for them in our lives, and thanksgiving for them to God.
We will be reviewing Abraham’s life for it is encouraging for us all to see how God can and does flow in and through imperfect people to accomplish His will. Abrahams life was pivotal to the redemption account and the restitution of all things. I started this series of teachings showing the glorious end result then we went to the beginning to see the sausage be made. Now, let’s continue examining Abram then Abraham’s journey with the Lord to the fulfillment of the most important promise ever, the birth of a promised child to the birth of the Promised Child. First, I am going to talk a little bit about faith and by the way faith is not alone.
Romans 10:17 (KJV)
17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
I suspect most if not all have heard or can even quote that verse but real faith, actionable faith, is far more than hearing something. What is heard must be received, believed, and acted upon within the context of the setting. In the case of Romans 10:17 this is talking about faith coming by hearing the Word of God over and over. This is the Rhema or spoken Word of God. Let’s look a little deeper.
Galatians 3:2 (KJV)
2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
Again, we see about the importance of hearing and with the hearing faith came and we discharged that faith by receiving the Spirit. That Scripture can refer to salvation or the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Both receiving salvation and the baptism of the Holy Spirit require that we have and discharge or release faith. How do we know if we have real faith or just mental assent?
James 2:20-23 (KJV)
20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
Okay, real faith, being fully persuaded (Romans 4:21) will cause us to act upon our faith. In our James text Abraham was fully persuaded as we see in Romans or even the 11th chapter of Hebrews. He acted upon the Word of God, and was deemed of God to have right standing and right doing, and was called a friend of God. This brings us to the third leg of the stool, love. This is the Divine love not worldly love, this is doing the commandments of God, having selfless motives, and walking Blood Covenant with the Father.
Galatians 5:6 (KJV)
6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.
Without love (agapē/ agapaō) you got nothing. The test of real love (agapē/ agapaō) for God is the performance of the Word in our lives. Remember love of God requires performance of the Word of God. This requires knowledge, believing, and doing. All of this was to set the stage for tomorrow. The following is the Scripture I will start with tomorrow.
Genesis 17:1-5 (KJV)
1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.
2 And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.
3 And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying,
4 As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.
5 Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.
TAKE HOME:
- Faith comes by hearing the Word of God again and again.
- Faith without action or doing is dead not real faith only mental assent.
- The power of faith is love (agapē/ agapaō).
As the Lord wills, I will return tomorrow with fresh revelation. The Lord bless and keep you and yours. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
