ARE WE GIVING EARNEST HEED TO GOD?

First Baptist Church Waterville, Maine
Greetings and welcome back to our weekday Bible Study from The Three Minute Word publications. God is so good. It is Friday, the day that I remind us all to pray for the Church, for everyone that names Jesus as Lord and as Savior. Right now, determine to receive the Word of the Lord. There has been an awakening of sufficient magnitude (critical mass) to initiate a change in the Church as a whole and in the nation, thus the sharpening of the divide. This awakening with repentance, arising with the tearing down of the high place (thoughts contrary to God), and stepping in the place of triumph purchased for us at Calvary must continue for us to be the Elijah generation which brings the appearance of Christ (Elisha).
The Church must become more and more distinct from the world and our nation should again become increasingly distinct from other nations. As we become more and more like our Father, more and more like Jesus who is just like the Father, the distinction will be apparent to all and will be attractive and desirable but not to the established Church. The world is already becoming more and more like their father, the devil, as they adopt his thoughts, words, and ways.
Now let’s take a moment and review our primary text for the Bible Study from the Book of Hebrews.
Hebrews 2:1-3 (KJV)
1 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.
2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;
3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;
As we start into the second chapter of this wonderful Book we must determine to receive the admonition to really pay attention to the Word of God. Let’s take a moment and look at a couple of different translations of the first verse.
Hebrews 2:1 (AMP)
1 SINCE ALL this is true, we ought to pay much closer attention than ever to the truths that we have heard, lest in any way we drift past [them] and slip away.
Hebrews 2:1 (MSG)
1 It’s crucial that we keep a firm grip on what we’ve heard so that we don’t drift off.
We must at all times firmly grip and remind ourselves of the Truths we have learned and had started but not fully incorporated into our lives. Things have a way of getting away from us especially during the good times. I would make this additional point which is that our most vulnerable time for the introduction of a doctrine of demons into our thoughts is during the bad times. This is so because there is a lack of congruence between our experience, our physical environment, and the Word of God. We then try to make sense of it and the result is that it requires a rejection of faith with a perversion of Scripture to fit a circumstance. All three of the translations above tell us that since Chapter One is the Truth we must safeguard those Truths and all Truths so that they do not drift out of our consciousness and we stop doing or making that Truth a necessary part of our life. Doing the Word of God has great (understatement) reward but letting it slip or not seizing the opportunity to get it in the first place has a tremendous down side (stealing, killing, and destroying in our life). This drifting away thing is something for us to avoid with all due diligence.
The human author of this wonderful Book continues as led of the Spirit to speak of the contrast between angels and the Word of salvation set before us by the Son and by the Father through the Holy Spirit. Remember in the first chapter of this Book of Hebrews we saw a constant contrasting of angels and the Son and the Word delivered by Prophets and the Word delivered by the Son. Here in Hebrews 2:2 God is making the point that His Word whether delivered by an angel, a Prophet, or the Son is equally sure. When an angel delivered the Word and we disobeyed there was judgment and justice. That has not changed and will not change for the Son (verse three) spoke of the same salvation. All who have followed in the proclaiming of this great salvation have confirmed the Word of the coming salvation and now the present salvation back to Adam. As we peer into the third verse we see that there are consequences for neglecting this great salvation that is a gift, ours for the taking. I will pick up here, Lord willing, next week.

Numbers 6:24-26 (KJV)
24 The LORD bless thee, and keep thee:
25 The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:
26 The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.
