EVERLASTING LIFE
Wednesday – October 31, 2018, Cheshvan 22, 5779
Greetings and welcome back to this wonderful Bible Study from the Book of John. God bless each one of you who are attentive to the Word of God, study to show yourselves approved, and act upon the Word doing the will of God. The featured picture was taken this summer from the city parking lot in Boothbay. Now, let’s look back at this study involving the Samaritan woman and the living water who gives eternal life.
John 4:12-17 (KJV)
12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?
13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.
16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.
17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:
Jesus quickly points out to this woman that this physical water is a very temporary solution for a very temporary life upon the earth. As we proceed forward let’s look back at the definition of “well” as associated with Jacob’s well in verse six (verse of man). This word “well” can mean a gushing fountain, spontaneously pouring forth water. In addition, this word “well” is feminine in gender indicating that it will cause increase or multiplication. This well has a life of its own and so does this spiritual water (Word) and that is the Anointing, the breath of life. Let’s go back to verse ten for a moment and review Jesus referring to “knewest the gift of God” and He Himself is that ultimate and very necessary gift of God to redeem all of mankind. Whosoever choses will be redeemed upon declaring Jesus as Lord and being immersed into Him. In Bible Numerology the number ten has to do with responsibility and generally refers to both our responsibilities and God’s responsibilities. The exercise of our responsibilities triggers God to exercise His responsibilities. For example, when we repent, He saves.
Now, back to verse fourteen. Jesus tells us rather plainly that this living water, the Word of God, will extinguish all thirst (spiritual) forever and in addition perpetually springs forth just like Jacob’s well in the natural producing everlasting life. Both the words “everlasting” and “life” are feminine in gender meaning they are life giving and will produce increase, multiplication. The Anointing, the Holy Spirit, is the life giver and energizes the Word of the living God. I do want to make something very clear here because I am focusing on the carnal benefits of natural water and the supernatural benefits of living water, the Anointed Word of God. In this life this living water by faith not only nourishes the spirit man but is medicine to the natural man. Faith in that incorruptible seed (Anointed Word of God) will at the last day give us an uncorrupted body just like Jesus has today in Heaven. Apparently this all sounds good to this woman however as we see she is still in the natural not the spiritual. She asks for the water that Jesus is talking about which brings us to the section of this account that is generally talked about, taught, or preached.
John 4:16-20 (KJV)
16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.
17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:
18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.
19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
Jesus tells this woman to go get her husband and return together ostensibly to receive this living water. She tells Him that she doesn’t have a husband and Jesus reads her mail telling her she has had five husbands and the man she is living with is not her husband. You see there was a hookup or shack up culture even in that day. As the Scripture reminds us there is nothing new under the sun (Ecclesiastes 1:9). Suddenly the light bulb comes on and she perceives Jesus is a Prophet. Given that revelation she then starts talking about worshipping on the mountain where they are whereas the Jews say one must worship in Jerusalem. Worship did occur to the true God in Jerusalem at the Temple but they, the Samaritans, had a contaminated religion and worshipped on a mountain in Samaria. As we will see Jesus tells her that not long into the future people will be able to worship anywhere.

25 The Lord make His face to shine upon and enlighten you and be gracious (kind, merciful, and giving favor) to you;
26 The Lord lift up His [approving] countenance upon you and give you peace (tranquility of heart and life continually).
