HE ESCAPED
Monday – July 1, 2019, Sivan 28, 5779
Greetings precious children of God, sons and daughters of the Most High God, the only living God and welcome back to this powerful Bible Study of the Book of John. John 10:39-42 (KJV)
39 Therefore they sought again to take him: but he escaped out of their hand,
40 And went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John at first baptized; and there he abode.
41 And many resorted unto him, and said, John did no miracle: but all things that John spake of this man were true.
42 And many believed on him there.
I trust that you had a wonderful and blessed weekend, that you took the time to notice what the Lord was doing in your life just because. As we rejoin this Bible Study recall that the Jews, the Religious leaders (rulers) were in an uproar about Jesus healing on the Sabbath and then perhaps even worse than that He said that Jehovah was His Father and He was the Son of God. Then Jesus has the audacity to say that He and the Father are one. Well brother and sister you and I also call Jehovah our Father, and we also are sons of God, and we also are one with Jesus and one with the Father. It doesn’t get any better than this sweet ones.
As we exam our text we find that once again the Jews are wanting to lay hands on Him but He just walks away. Now, just so we all understand, they didn’t want to give him a hug and a kiss, they wanted to murder Him. He was upsetting their applecart bigtime. They ruled with an iron hand controlling the very economy and access to God. We are not told how many Jews were present nor how many wanted to lay hands on Him but I think we can safely assume it was more than one and likely many. From a physical standpoint it would not have been any problem for them to take Jesus prisoner. In addition, there most likely were Temple guards present that are trained in subduing people. So, did they take Him captive and He had to raise money for a good lawyer outside of their grasp and after some time and effort get released? No! We are told “he escaped out of their hand”. No effort and no time delay sweet brothers and sisters, both of which are of the curse.
Let’s take a look at the word translated as ‘escaped’. Of the 222 times this Greek word appears in the New Testament it is translated as follows; go out 60, come 34, depart 28, go 25, go forth 25, come out 23, come forth 9, miscellaneous translations 18, [Total Count: 222] according to Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. It would seem to me that although perhaps subtle the word escaped seems to imply some struggle that never happened. As we prepare to move forward let’s look at this word ‘escaped’ from a different source which says that when it applies to persons it means to go or come forth (The Complete Word Study Dictionary – New Testament). I take the time to point some of these things out to highlight the necessity of diligent study to glean the most accurate view of Scripture.
2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV)
15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
As we move forward, we see Jesus and His disciples just walking away from these murderous Jews and they take a little respite (vacation) beyond the Jordan. Did they go to this particular location because it was a way of escape, that they were tired, perhaps wanted to try a new vacation spot, or perhaps something else? We must never forget that the life and ministry of Jesus in the earth is a model of our life and ministry in the earth. Jesus made three things clear and they were that He only said what the Father said, only did what the Father did, and the Father did the works (by the agency of the Holy Spirit). Can we say the same? So, He was directed of God the Father through the Holy Spirit to go to this very place at this very time because it would further the ministry, the Kingdom of God. Also, none of us must ever forget that we are commanded to do as He did and even greater things (John 14:12). That would include walking away from those of the world who would lay hands upon us. We see that many followed Jesus to this vacation spot and in that place, they believed on Him. They did not believe in the presence of the unbelieving Jews but here in this place beyond Jordan they chose to believe. There is a place where God can and will reach us or more importantly where we are in an attitude of receptivity.
