JACOB AND ESAU
Thursday – May 3, 2018, Iyar 18, 5778

Greetings and welcome back to this wonderful Bible Study which if received will build our faith greatly. As you know this study is taken from the Book of Hebrews. Let’s jump into todays study by first reading our primary text aloud.
Hebrews 11:20-22 (KJV)
20 By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.
21 By faith Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshipped, leaning upon the top of his staff.
22 By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones.
Initially Rebekah was barren (unable to have children) which is common in the line of Christ as you study starting right with Abraham and Sarah.
Genesis 25:20-23 (KJV)
20 And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah to wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padanaram, the sister to Laban the Syrian.
21 And Isaac intreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren: and the LORD was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.
22 And the children struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to enquire of the LORD.
23 And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.
The word “entreated” in verse twenty-one above means that Isaac interceded for Rebekah to bear children. The LORD heard Isaac, and Rebekah conceived and brought forth twins. Isaacs’ intercession was heard by God and God acted for it was the will of God, a vital part of the Blood Covenant Isaac had with God. The Messiah, the Christ, cannot come if Rebekah is barren. As we continue in our text we see that she apparently sensed within herself that the struggle in her womb was more than expected and she asked the LORD about it. Wow, I wonder how much better our lives would be if we inquired first and more often of the Lord? She was told that two nations were in her. We know that one was the Hebrews or Jewish people from which the Messiah who would bring the Blessing to whosoever will. The other, Esau, was one that despised, thought little of the Blood Covenant with Abraham and Isaac. He would sell his birthright as the first-born to the second born. Perhaps we can also see this as a picture of Israel and the Church. I do not say that in any way to imply that the Church as replaced Israel, that would be blasphemy. Esau the first born became the people of Edom (red) which is where modern day Jordan is located today. Well, let’s move along with this account of Jacob and Esau.
Genesis 25:24-28 (KJV)
24 And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.
25 And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau.
26 And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau’s heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.
27 And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.
28 And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.
When these children are born Isaac is now sixty years of age, they have been married, he has been comforted twenty years. The name Jacob means heel catcher or the one who supplants. I suppose we could look at this as the first and last Adam. Jesus the last Adam supplanted the first Adam providing redemption for us which Adam could not. Because of the sacrifice and resurrection of Christ Jesus, in Christ Jesus we have supplanted the rule of Satan, satanic forces, and the curse in the earth. He (Jesus) and we have supplanted the Devil (Satan) and the curse. The devil, the devils’ cohorts, and the curse are supplanted (ousted and replaced) by the Blessing (Holy Spirit and Power). When the bible account tells us that Rebekah loved Jacob we are telegraphed how this is all going to go down.
Genesis 25:29-34 (KJV)
29 And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint:
30 And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.
31 And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.
32 And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?
33 And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.
34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.
Sounds a little like the Garden of Eden don’t you think. This is physical food and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil may or may not have been spiritual (likely spiritual-mixing of ideas). Adam and Eve forfeited their Covenant for a demonic idea and Esau forfeited the rights of the first-born for a little soup. Our birthright the Covenant of God which we enter at salvation is paramount to all things forever. The birthright of the first-born male is for the double portion. So, let’s say there are four males born to Jewish parents, the first-born male will inherit twice as much as the other three. To keep it simple lets, look at $100. The first born would get $40 and the other three $20 each. Jesus is the first-born from the dead and we in Him are also considered as first-born and entitled to the double portion. Of course, in the Kingdom of God these numbers are of no significance because we are looking at an inheritance without limit. Because we are joint-heirs with Jesus according to Scripture we have access to all that Jesus has access to without diminishing Him or Heavens resources at all. Lord willing tomorrow I will get to the blessing of Jacob and Esau. Until our next publication, I speak this Scriptural prayer for your life right now, receive it in the name of Jesus, confess it, and walk it out with thanksgiving.
2 Peter 1:2-4 (KJV)
2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
