JOHN INTRODUCES A NEW PRIESTHOOD
Monday – September 17, 2018, Tishrei 8, 5779
Greetings and welcome back to this wonderful faith building Bible Study based on the Book of John. I will be digressing just a bit in our study today. As I was in prayer this morning it seemed that this was a topic Holy Spirit was directing me to start the week with. You will recall that both of John’s parents were of the Levitical line therefore John was in the line of Aaron, a Levite and eligible to serve at the alter of the Temple. John the Baptist is the one that not only bore witness of the Light but he introduced a new priesthood not of the Levitical line, one gained by earthly inheritance, but one gained by spiritual inheritance. That is to say brother and sister that we are not priests in the Kingdom of God by any physical inheritance but by spiritual when we are born again and enter the Kingdom of God. He would introduce a new line of priests of the tribe of Judah and a new High Priest of that tribe as well. Jesus is of the tribe of Judah, He is the Lion of the tribe of Judah so brother in Him we are of that some tribe and priests like our High Priest, we are lions as well, and like Him also after the order of Melchisedec. Let us review a little of this from the Book of Hebrews.
Hebrews 7:11-17 (KJV)
11 If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron?
12 For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.
13 For he of whom these things are spoken pertaineth to another tribe, of which no man gave attendance at the altar.
14 For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.
15 And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest,
16 Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life.
17 For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
Melchisedec from Genesis fourteen is the type and shadow of Christ Jesus to come. Just as Melchisedec was Priest and King so is our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus and precious ones so are we in Him! The same Blessing given to Adam in the Garden has come down through the Patriarch’s and finally brought to all by Christ Jesus.
Galatians 3:13-14 (KJV)
13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Review Hebrews 7:12 (think about the numerology here) and notice the reference to a change of the law. We are no longer under the law of sin and death but we are under the law of grace.
Romans 8:2 (KJV)
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
Romans 6:14-15 (KJV)
14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
The Blessing (Holy Spirit) was only available to a few down through the Old Covenant following the Day of Sin and Death in the Garden. However, now in Christ Jesus, He (the Blessing) is restored to all. As I finish for today let us review a very important passage of Scripture as it relates to how the Blessing was preserved among mankind and came down to us. Remember this also relates to the Galatians chapter three passage above. The same Blessing which was on Abraham is now come upon us in Christ Jesus. It is always critical to recall that without Abraham and the Covenant God made with him and the Word in the presence of Holy Spirit in Genesis chapter fifteen there could be no Christ (Messiah), no New Covenant.
Genesis 14:17-22 (KJV)
17 And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king’s dale.
18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
19 And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:
20 And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.
21 And the king of Sodom said unto Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself.
22 And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth,
Meditate upon this, see Christ Jesus, and see yourself, and I will pick up right here tomorrow.

24 The Lord bless you and watch, guard, and keep you;
25 The Lord make His face to shine upon and enlighten you and be gracious (kind, merciful, and giving favor) to you;
26 The Lord lift up His [approving] countenance upon you and give you peace (tranquility of heart and life continually).
