THE JEWS MURMURED – DO WE MURMUR
Friday – January 11, 2019, Sh’vat 5, 5779
Greetings my dear fellow saints of God in Christ Jesus and welcome back to this stimulating, powerful, intriguing, and faith building Bible Study of the Book of John. As we approach todays study of the Word let us purpose in our heart to set aside for a few moments the distractions of the day and see what we can glean that can change our circumstances as we go forth in faith. Let us never forget that the righteous are to live by faith. Let’s each one of us ask; “am I living by faith”?
Romans 1:17 (KJV)
17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
Hebrews 10:38 (KJV)
38 Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.
The word “just” is the justified which is interchangeable with the word righteous. Now let’s pick up with our primary Bible text and move forward in our study.
John 6:40-45 (KJV)
40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.
41 The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven.
42 And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?
43 Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves.
44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
45 It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.
The Jews present at the time are complaining about Jesus and all that He is saying. Never lose sight of the fact that the same will happen to us the more we are like Him. They are rejecting Him out of hand and are not considering even for a moment how the Scriptures, the teachings of Moses and the Prophets intersects with this man standing before them. They have witnessed things of this man not seen in Israel or anywhere else to this time. We know of things the various prophets did and the mighty works associated with Moses, however, this is one man is preaching and teaching, healing the sick, calming the storms, being translocated from one place to another, and feeding the multitudes with physical as well as spiritual food. Afterall, the feeding of the 5000 is the very reason this particular group is standing here talking with Him.
The Jews are thinking and speaking in completely natural terms and Jesus is speaking to them of spiritual Truth. What they are saying sounds just like the people in His hometown of Nazareth.
Matthew 13:54-58 (KJV)
54 And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?
55 Is not this the carpenter’s son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?
56 And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things?
57 And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.
58 And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.
Notice this also in the Book of Mark.
Mark 6:3-4 (KJV)
3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.
4 But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.
In the Mark reference above Jesus is identified as a carpenter and there is no mention of his father Joseph. However, in the Matthew reference above there is a mention of Joseph His supposed earthly father but it is not real clear if he is still alive from the text. Both the Matthew and Mark texts are addressing the exact same event. Now as we examine our text in John 6:42 it would seem that Joseph is still alive. After, the episode in Jerusalem when Jesus stayed behind and they went back to get Him we hear nothing explicitly of Joseph even at the Cross or after the Resurrection. The timing of our text in John is a couple of years later than the event of Matthew and Mark in Nazareth. Based on this it would seem that Joseph either dies or otherwise leaves the family between the second and third year of the earthly ministry of Jesus. As we consider the Jews murmuring and the unbelief of the folks in Nazareth we must ask ourselves if we fall into the very same trap concerning the Anointed people among us that perhaps we have known all of our lives?
