THE WORD WAS GOD
Tuesday – August 28, 2018, Elul 17, 5778

The featured picture today is the Word incarnate in the earth and speaking the Word to the people who gathered. Welcome back to this wonderful study of the Bible Book of John. Let’s read our primary text aloud then delve into every level of Truth the Lord wants brought to our attention today.
John 1:1-5 (KJV)
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
Yesterday I talked at some length about the phrase “In the beginning” and so I will move forward in our text today. I hope I established yesterday that “the beginning” was not the beginning of Genesis 1:3 which is about six thousand years ago but the beginning of Genesis 1:1 which was likely billions of years ago. Our Bible text tells us that in the beginning was the Word. The “Word” from our text is the Greek word transliterated to English as “logos” which is a Divine utterance, or a living voice. Any of the defined persons of the Trinity may speak but the spokesman front and center to mankind is the Word, Christ Jesus for us. For a moment I want to attempt to address the difference between logos and rhema. Logos is a Divine utterance, the speaking of a living voice and rhema carries with it the idea of a pouring forth of the spoken Word as in a command or prophecy. It seems that “logos” is the original speaking of a word of God and “rhema” is when it is repeated by an anointed vessel.
John 3:34 (KJV)
34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.
John 6:63 (KJV)
63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
The word “words” in the preceding verses is the Greek word transliterated as “rhema”. Notice this applies to ones who are sent, sent to speak what God (Father) has given them to say. Certainly, Jesus filled that bill but so do we precious brother and sister. We are the sent ones today that God is using to speak His Word with a living voice. Now, if you send yourself you are on your own. The one who is sent of God with the Word of God in his mouth has the Spirit of God functioning in their life without measure or limitation. All words are spirit, some the spirit of darkness and those we are not to utter and do not bring the will of God to pass. Our words are to be of God, of the Master (Christ Jesus, The Word) bringing life to the hearers including ourselves and bringing the will of God to pass. You and I, the redeemed, are the voice, the living voice, of the Word of God in the earth.
As we look back at our text we find that the Word was present in the beginning. The Word was the chief or head of all things in the beginning. Because of this reference to the beginning we should not conclude that the Word did not exist before the beginning. God has always been, the Word has always been, there is no beginning for God. We are being told that in the beginning of this material creation the Word was preeminent. The speaking Word, the Voice of the Word was with God and was God. The Word, Christ Jesus, the Son of God is every bit as much God yesterday, today, and tomorrow as God the Father and God the Holy Spirit. They are God three persons in One. The Word of God whether written or spoken is indistinguishable from the person just as our words should be indistinguishable from our person. Anything else is a lie and hypocrisy.
It seems obvious but likely worth saying that all of the material creation came into being by the spoken Word. As we proceed further in our text it seems that all of the immaterial world also came into being by the spoken living Word of God. Every Word from the mouth of God is a living Word. Every Word from the mouth of a born-again, Spirit filled believer uttered in faith, motivated or powered by love, led of Holy Spirit is also a living Word. As I finish with the first verse of this wonderful Book let me reiterate that chief among all things in the beginning was the Word of God and so it is now.
As we examine the second verse, we find the writer of this gospel Book reiterating that the Word, the One we call Christ Jesus today, was the living voice, the Divine utterance in the beginning. The word “beginning” from the first verse can also be translated as cornerstone, first, power, principality (not evil) or ruler. I think we can quickly see that without the “Word” we have nothing. As I close for today I want to make a comment about the authorship of this wonderful Book. Because of the naming we assume it was written by the disciple and Apostle John. The very same who wrote the three little John’s and the Book of Revelation. It is not explicit in the Book that this same John is the writer however if you run ahead and look at the last several verses of the Book it seems clear that the disciple whom Jesus loved, John, is the human author.

10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;
