WITHOUT HIM NOTHING WAS MADE

How wonderful is the Lord our God!? All of creation including us was made by our God, by the will of God, and for our God. However, He then has given us all things to enjoy and we are joint-heirs (owners) with Him in all things. We are family brother and sister. Let us shout Abba, Father, I have a Daddy and He is the Almighty God and there is none like unto Him! Welcome back to this wonderful Bible Study from the Book of John. As I was looking at the title I placed for this study which comes from the third verse it struck me that not only could nothing be made without the Word, living Word, neither could anyone be saved without the Word, the living Word. Now, let’s delve into our primary text and start by reading it aloud.
John 1:1-6 (KJV)
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
Isn’t the Scripture wonderful giving us light and life? We see that the author is pointing very clearly at the Word as the creator of all things. This is not to say that each person of God did not play are role. The idea of the Father, was spoken (Jesus, the Word), and Holy Spirit caused it to be. We glean from our text that the Word created all of the material world. One might ask then, who created the immaterial world? By that I am referring to Heaven, the abode of God. Things in Heaven are just as real as things in the earth or elsewhere in this material creation. When Scripture tells us that all things were made by Him we can conclude that to be the immaterial and the material. The point that is being driven home here over and over is that the living Word of God is inseparable from the person known as the Word, the One whom we call Savior and the living Word spoken by the Word is indispensable to the creation. It was not only indispensable to the creation but all things that are of God in our lives.
Let me interject something here that may broaden our thinking and bring increased insight to this passage. Let me reiterate that it is important not to conclude that Jesus alone was the Creator but that He was the Divine utterance, the living voice of God that caused the creation of both the immaterial and material. I think that most of us are aware that God created us as three-part creatures, those parts being spirit, soul, and body (1 Thessalonians 5:23). The spirit and soul are the immaterial part of us and is in the image and likeness of God and came from God in the creation of Adam. Our body is the material part taken from the earth. God is also three persons or parts in One. Those persons are Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Father is analogous to the mind (soul) in man, the seat of thought and knowledge. Holy Spirit is the power and the life of God and is the One who does the work. Jesus is the body existing today as man and God, the One who speaks the Words (thoughts) of God upon which the Holy Spirit acts.
Jesus tells us that out of the abundance of the heart (mind/soul) the mouth speaks. Jesus speaks what is in the Father’s heart and Holy Spirit performs those Words. It is exactly the same for us. We receive of the Word of God through our spirit man by Holy Spirit. This is communicated to our mind/soul, it is the thoughts, the will, of the Father, we speak those words in faith, in love, led of Holy Spirit and Holy Spirit sees to it they (the Words) come to pass. God is doing nothing in our lives independent of spoken words, Words of God, the will of God. God our Father gives His will to Jesus who speaks those Words, Holy Spirit communicates those words to our spirit which shares with our mind/heart. We then decide to receive or reject the words from God, to give them priority or not, even to remember them or not. When we sit down to read the Word of God we cannot approach it simply as words on a page but ask Holy Spirit to quicken (Word of life) those words to our spirit man and our mind/soul. The more of the Word of God we receive and value far above all else (nothing superseding in any way) the more we will talk like and act like God, like Jesus. The more we think, talk, and act like God the more people will be attracted to us and the more our life will look like that of the Master.
As I prepare to close for today let’s look at the fourth verse where we find the statement “In him was life”. We can safely assume I believe that the “him” here is the Word, Jesus. Now, the question is, what about the life? Life was and still is in the Word, in Him the Word, the living, spoken Word of God. This is the Word in our mouth that was first in the mouth of the Word, the Lord Jesus. Life, eternal life has come by the sacrifice of the person who is the Word, Christ Jesus. We see in this same verse that the life is connected to light. Consider the following verses in the context of our text and Lord willing I will pick up here tomorrow.
John 14:10 (KJV)
10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
Revelation 21:23 (KJV)
23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
