WHAT SAY YOU?

A winter wonderland, snow still on the trees, a freshly plowed driveway (dooryard in Maine), and a beautiful and warm home snuggled in the beauty. Greetings partners and friends and welcome back to this wonderful and powerful Bible Study of the Book of John. Those reading this on Facebook please hit the “like” and “share” buttons to disseminate the gospel beyond my reach but within your reach and responsibility. Our God is so good to give us the Word so that there is no need for the diligent to stumble about in the dark. Well, let’s go ahead and pick up our study where we left off yesterday by first reading our primary Bible text aloud.
John 8:1-5 (KJV)
1 Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.
2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.
3 And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,
4 They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.
5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?
The religious ruling class are searching for anything with which they can accuse Him or catch Him in Scriptural error (good luck with that) to bring a loss of favor among the people. They are jealous, they are filled with envy which is the sin of the Pharisees (religious ruling class) which brings them to call for His death on a Cross. As we proceed you might want to review yesterdays teaching to gain the most from todays. They have brought this “woman taken in adultery in the very act” to Jesus. They know that Jesus is compassionate, merciful, and loving and will not want to put this woman to death and they will have another breach of the Law committed by Jesus. Ever wonder about who the man was in this situation. Adultery requires both a man and a woman were both present for they were caught in the very act. After all it would be difficult to prove without both being present and in the sexual act.
Leviticus 20:10 (KJV)
10 And the man that committeth adultery with another man’s wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.
Seems like this is a setup where the religious ruling class already in their hypocrisy gave the man a pass on this act which is an evil seed in society. Not bringing the man with the woman before Jesus is a sin in and of itself and makes them a party to the adultery and also subject to the penalty of death. Perhaps we will remember this when later on in the account they all walk away one by one. Next, we see the religious ruling class remind Jesus of the Law and then ask His opinion of the Law and this circumstance. From our perspective this is very interesting, ironic even, for they are asking the Word what He thinks of the Word. The Word is the One who gave the Words to Moses in the first place. Now, let’s move the text forward just a little.
John 8:5-9 (KJV)
5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?
6 This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.
7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
8 And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.
9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
You and I have heard many speculations about what Jesus wrote that day on the ground. I have heard it said that He was listing their sins. I have speculated since we are not told explicitly that He was waiting on the Father is give Him the words for this occasion. Of course, all of those who brought the woman to Jesus without the man are already guilty of adultery and worthy of death so there was no need to elucidate further sins. The next phrase that Jesus utters has become a common phrase in our culture today and generally is looking to justify one sin by another. That is to say, yes, I sinned but you sin too so let’s not be casting stones. Jesus stoops back down and one by one each of these scribes and pharisees melt away convicted by their own conscience. Now it is just Love, mercy, and justice, and the woman. Lord willing, I will pick up right here tomorrow.
Until our next publication, as a Bible Teacher and Prophetic Voice I speak this blessing over each and every one of you, receive it by faith in Jesus name!
Numbers 6:24-26 (AMP)
24 The Lord bless you and watch, guard, and keep you;
25 The Lord make His face to shine upon and enlighten you and be gracious (kind, merciful, and giving favor) to you;
26 The Lord lift up His [approving] countenance upon you and give you peace (tranquility of heart and life continually).
