WORD, LIFE, LIGHT, DARKNESS

Welcome back to this wonderful faith building Bible Study from the Book of John presented by Eastern Gate Ministries International and Dr. David R. Wood. This is such a wonderful Book, the whole Bible, and this one Book. Our text is starting to hone in on the centrality of the Word (Jesus) and His speaking the Word of God (a Divine utterance by a living voice). The absence of either or both (the Word can exist without speaking but speaking is essential to creation, the work of God) would leave us with no created things either immaterial or material and no life or light. We, men/mankind, need light which leads to our desperately needed salvation. Let’s review our primary text reading it aloud then move back into this very interesting and provocative study.
John 1:1-6 (KJV)
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
Yesterday we left off with the fourth verse meditating on the words ‘him”, “life”, and “light”. The “him” is the Word, Jesus. Next is the word “life” and our text states that the life was in Jesus, the Word. Our life, eternal life, was and is in Christ Jesus, who is the Word. When we receive the Word, the Word activates or allows Holy Spirit to create a new creature (creation) and we are translated out of darkness into the light, the Kingdom of the Son of God.
John 14:10 (KJV)
10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
So, what is Jesus saying here? Where is the Father? He says the Father is in Him and He is in the Father but He is on earth and the Father is on the Throne in Heaven. He says the Father is doing the works but again the Father is in Heaven. You have heard me say before that our spirit man is in the earth and in Heaven seated at the right hand of the Father in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:6). The Father is in Heaven but the Spirit of the Father is not only in Heaven but on the earth, Holy Spirit and Power, the Anointing resulting in the Anointed One (Christ).
Acts 10:38 (KJV)
38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
God in this verse is referring to the Father. I hope that the addition of this verse adds clarity. When we are born again who quickens us when we decide to be baptized into Christ Jesus? It is Holy Spirit who quickens us or makes us spiritually alive, imparting eternal life. This quickening comes by the Word who is Jesus, spoken living Words, and the light which gives life, redemption.
Ephesians 2:5 (KJV)
5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
Grace is a facet or aspect of Holy Spirit and Power. If we look back at John 14:10 and Acts 10:38 for a moment we see that the Father gave Jesus direction, Jesus spoke and did the will of the Father, and the Holy Spirit did the work (healings, miracles, raising the dead, and so on). Isn’t the Word of God just wonderful? Now, I want to move to the mention of light from our text. Recall that yesterday I gave the following verse for us to be considering as we meditate on the text.
Revelation 21:23 (KJV)
23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
The context of the preceding verse is the new earth and heaven and the descending of the Holy Jerusalem out of Heaven onto the earth. Notice the phrase “God did lighten it” and the phrase “the Lamb is the light”. The Greek words translated to English as light in this verse are two different Greek words. The “lighten” is the same Greek word as in our text and means a general more diffuse light and the one associated with the Lamb is like a portable lamp. The Word of God, the living Word spoken, is a light for all of mankind. Spiritually speaking one does not know they are in the dark until someone turns on the light, which is the Word of God. Physically we stumble about in the dark but can avoid all the obstacles in the light. Perhaps this should make us wonder why we don’t pursue the Light with all that is within us. That life that came and gave His life for us brought Holy Spirit (The Blessing is back) who is in and with us who believe. Now, we are the light of the world which brings life to all who receive the Word.

Colossians 1:9-10 (KJV)
9 For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;
10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;
