WHY WEEPEST THOU?

Greetings dear and precious brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus and welcome back to this ongoing teaching of the wonderful Book of John. The featured picture is another winter scene here at home from last winter. I am writing this on the 28th of December but I have no doubt that the 26th of January 2021 will look a lot like this scene. Winter in Maine. Please take a moment and share this teaching as widely as possible to expand the reach of the Truth. As you may know when we compare the various events recorded in the four gospels that there can be differences in how each writer records the event. These recordings are not in conflict for both are inspired and led of the Holy Spirit. Together the various reports give us additional insight into the event one record by itself did not provide. We will be looking at this event in the Book of Mark today but first let’s read our primary Bible text in the Book of John.
John 20:10-14 (KJV)
10 Then the disciples went away again unto their own home.
11 But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre,
12 And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.
13 And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.
14 And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.
Now let’s look at this same event as recorded by Mark.
Mark 16:1-4 (KJV)
1 And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.
2 And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.
3 And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?
4 And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great.
First, we see that Mary Magdalene is not alone coming to the tomb of Jesus, but accompanied by another Mary, not the supposed natural mother of Jesus. For them the presence of the stone blocking entrance to the sepulchre was not the issue but who would move the stone. That is faith dear ones. To their surprise, and I suspect some relief, the stone was already rolled aside. We see that they both entered the tomb. This account records only one angel (described as a “young man”).
Mark 16:5-8 (KJV)
5 And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted.
6 And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.
7 But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you.
8 And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid.
Here and as, we see throughout Scripture the first words from the angel are to not be afraid. The angel tells them that Jesus is risen from the dead, they are the first to know this and witness the empty tomb. Peter and John have come and gone.
Mark 16:9-13 (KJV)
9 Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils.
10 And she went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept.
11 And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not.
12 After that he appeared in another form unto two of them, as they walked, and went into the country.
13 And they went and told it unto the residue: neither believed they them.
The post-resurrection encounter with Jesus by Mary Magdalene is not recorded here but we will see this tomorrow. It appears that perhaps the other Mary has departed as well. We see that not only did she encounter lots of unbelief so did the disciples on the road to Emmaus. What about us? Do we doubt the Word when no physical evidence confirms it?
Lord willing, I will pick up with our text in the Book of John tomorrow.
2 Chronicles 20:20b (KJV)
