THOSE WE SERVED BEFORE

Greetings dear and precious saints of God and welcome back to our Bible Study of the Bible Book of Isaiah. Please take few moments and share this teaching as widely as possible by every means available to you. Thank you so much for sharing. You are a blessing to this Ministry. You have played a hand in expanding our reach with the good news. There is no news, absolutely no news, near as good as the Word of God. The featured picture was taken on a summer vacation in Fayette Maine in 2015. I don’t know about you, but I really enjoy these kinds of scenes. Now let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text and continue reading out loud. You don’t have to read my words out loud although it will help you understand but always read the Bible texts out loud.
Isaiah 26:13-16 (NLT)
13 O LORD our God, others have ruled us, but you alone are the one we worship.
14 Those we served before are dead and gone. Their departed spirits will never return! You attacked them and destroyed them,
and they are long forgotten.
15 O LORD, you have made our nation great; yes, you have made us great. You have extended our borders, and we give you the glory!
16 LORD, in distress we searched for you. We prayed beneath the burden of your discipline.
Those of you who follow these teachings and are students of the Bible know the history of Israel is one of alternating obedience to God and disobedience. A history of feast and famine. Feast is the fruit of obedience before the Lord and famine is the fruit of disobedience. Which one are we experiencing in our lives? Famine is never the will of God, it is never God testing us, or God teaching us something, it is always the work of the devil. The devil has to have our cooperation to bring stealing, killing, and destroying into our lives. These things are never the will of God.
John 10:10 (KJV)
10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
Deuteronomy 28:14-15 (KJV)
14 And thou shalt not go aside from any of the words which I command thee this day, to the right hand, or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.
15 But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee:
It is such blasphemy (wickedness) to blame the Lord for our troubles or to infer in any way that He is playing a part in our troubles. We see the primary trouble maker when we look in the mirror. So, as we look back at our text and verse thirteen (thirteen the number of depravity and rebellion) we might as the question, why did another rule over them? If you didn’t just skip down to this point in the teaching you know the answer. They had forsaken the Word of God and turned aside to other words, and thus other gods. We know from verse fourteen that Isaiah is talking about other peoples, nations, ruling them, not the worship of idols. The thirteenth verse ends with “but you alone are the one we worship”. Perhaps that is true at the very moment this text is written but was very false not very long ago. The other aspect of this is the question of self-deception. Have any of us ever deceived ourselves to achieve a desired end? When we go into bondage it is because we have turned aside to other words and other gods (Deuteronomy 28 above). Now let’s move into verse fourteen of our primary text.
Isaiah 26:14 (NLT)
14 Those we served before are dead and gone. Their departed spirits will never return! You attacked them and destroyed them,
and they are long forgotten.
And so, it was.
2 Kings 19:35-36 (KJV)
35 And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the LORD went out, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.
36 So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here tomorrow.
2 Chronicles 20:20 b (KJV)
20 … Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.
Receive the blessing in Jesus’ name!
Numbers 6:24-26 (MSG)
24 GOD bless you and keep you,
25 GOD smile on you and gift you,
26 GOD look you full in the face and make you prosper.
