DULL OF HEARING
Tuesday – October 10, 2017

Our God is most wonderful! The children, the sons of God are indeed a very favored and privileged people. When we purpose to spend the time necessary and do in fact dwell in the secret place of the most High abiding under the shadow of the Almighty, a thousand may fall at one side and ten thousand at the other but it does not come near us. We only look on with our eyes to witness what happens to the wicked. You probably recognize this as paraphrased excerpts of the ninety-first Psalm. This is not just high-sounding rhetoric but a spiritual reality that can keep us out of the Las Vegas morgue or any other morgue due to an attack of the enemy. Now let us return to our wonderful Bible Study from the Book of Hebrews and our primary text.
Hebrews 5:9-14 (KJV)
9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;
10 Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec.
11 Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.
12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
Today let’s pick up with verse ten where we are being reminded that Jesus, the Son, was called or appointed of God the Father as High Priest after the order of Melchisedec. We have discussed how this man Melchisedec was priest and king of Salem and shows up in Scripture during the life of Abraham. We see a type and shadow of the Lord Jesus in him for Jesus is also King and Priest. Melchisedec is also a foreshadowing of the sons and daughters of the Most High God who is Christ Jesus are made kings and priests. Salem is an early name for Jerusalem. The name Salem which means complete or whole. The name Jerusalem means complete safety gushing as water. This is a wonderful picture of what salvation provides. The gushing water is symbolic of the Word of God and the complete safety is what that Word provides when received and believed. In the story of Melchisedec we see the elements of communion, the image of Christ and the work of the Cross. We find the tithe explained in these same passages found in Genesis fourteen. Those who pay tithes should fully expect to become very rich. We also saw that Abraham was an owner of Heaven and earth in common with the Most High God. And this was Abraham’s position by faith, the father of us all, before the Cross. Things did not get worse after the Cross but got exponentially greater. Why are we living like beggars under the bridge with our little signs that we will testify for money or food. Awake, arise, and triumph Church! Just think about it, fourteen is the Bible number of deliverance and salvation. The writer of Hebrews said that he or she could not say all that I just said because those around him/her at the time were dull of hearing. Are we dull of hearing?
Dullness of hearing is acquired by repetitively making wrong choices. It is a first degree relative of hardness of heart and stiffness of the neck. If we repeatedly reject the truth for a lie or choose to do the wrong thing we become increasingly dull of hearing and soon we are unaware of the still small voice. True repentance can change everything.
Revelation 3:19-22 (KJV)
19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.
22 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
Is there anyone that God does not love? God loves everyone therefore He is reaching out to everyone to bring correction and even tells us how to respond which is with enthusiastic repentance. Why in the world is Jesus on the outside knocking on the door? Remember He is talking to the Church! As we look at verse twenty above, let’s think about what kind of things might interfere with us hearing a person knocking on the physical door to our home. What about other noises like the TV, other people, sleep, simply a lack of attention, or perhaps we are not listening for a knock at the door for we are not expecting anyone. I think we can quickly see that the distractions of life and focusing on other voices can keep us from hearing the knock of the Master. Just as God speaks to us by His Holy Spirit in a still small voice so will the knock at the door be gentle. Verse twenty-one admonishes us to be overcomers. Overcomers of what? Overcomers of all the distractions, temptations of life. Since Jesus overcame so can we for we can and shall do the things He did and the greater things. Jesus was given to sit on His Father’s Throne and He says that we overcome in like fashion as He did we can sit on His Throne which is the Father’s Throne. We are seated beside the Father in the Heavenly in Christ Jesus. O brother and sister rejoice! This brings us to the twenty-second verse, let’s look at it in a different translation.
Revelation 3:22 (HCSB)
22 “Anyone who has an ear should listen to what the Spirit says to the churches.”
See the really not so subtle change in the language from the King James Version? This version makes it clear that this is a choice we make, to hear or not to hear. What have I chosen, what have you chosen?
Until our next publication, I speak blessing into your life right now, receive it in the name of Jesus, confess it, and walk it out with thanksgiving.
Numbers 6:24-26 (KJV)
24 The LORD bless thee, and keep thee:
25 The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:
26 The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.
