THE BLOOD COVENANT – PART THREE
Sunday – February 18, 2018

Welcome back to this five-part series concerning The Blood Covenant ratified by the Blood of Christ Jesus. This Covenant is what is commonly referred to as the New Testament however do not be thrown off by the word “New” thinking that all of the “Old” was done away with. The thirty-nine Books of the “Old Testament” remain fully the Word of God. They are as True today as when they were uttered excluding the sacrificial laws made obsolete by the sacrifice of Christ Jesus. The main focus of this teaching (all parts) is to look at and review the ten common elements of Blood Covenant. Blood covenant is a practice quite common in many ancient cultures. Perhaps you have seen the cowboy and Indian shows as I have where the cowboy enters into blood covenant with an Indian. They would usually declare what was covered by the covenant then each one (or a surrogate) would cut himself usually on the arm and they would rub those
cuts together to symbolize becoming one blood. It also was common that that cut would have some material rubbed in to assure scarring as proof of the covenant. Also, at times there would be an exchange of gifts that clearly could be identified as from the other for onlookers. I have abstracted these from E. W. Kenyon’s book on The Blood Covenant (which I wholeheartedly recommend). I covered criteria one and two last Sunday so I will pick up with number three today. These are not in a particular order like most to least or least to most important.
- The blood covenant is perpetual or eternal and so is God’s covenant with Israel and the Church. Both were brought into covenant through Abraham. When God is making Covenant with Jesus and His Helper the Holy Spirit He is also making Covenant with Abraham and the Jewish people which we call Israel to follow. Review Genesis chapter fifteen. In the following verse God is talking with Abraham having just changed his name from Abram (high father) to Abraham (father of a multitude).
Genesis 17:7 (KJV)
7 And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.
The casual reader of the preceding verse might wrongly conclude that God (Elohim) is Covenanting with Abraham and all that preceded from him. The word “seed” in our text is male in gender and singular in number indicating one particular seed or offspring and that is Christ.
Galatians 3:16 (KJV)
16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.
Now the Church.
Hebrews 13:20 (KJV)
20 Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,
The “great shepherd” is our Lord Jesus in His role as God, King of kings and Lord of lords. The sheep are us, the gods, kings, and lords made just a little lower than Elohim (Genesis 1:26, Psalm 8:5). The blood of this man Jesus confirmed the everlasting Covenant of our redemption. On to number four.
4. This blood covenant is indissoluble, unbreakable.
This Blood Covenant is never going away and there is no opting out. The Word of God stands no matter the actions of a person (John 10:35). Scripture cannot be broken or escaped from. Scripture applies to all peoples and is binding upon all peoples whether Jesus is Lord or not. The unbeliever cannot create another reality apart from Scripture by saying I don’t believe therefore the Truth of Scripture does not apply to me. Without Jesus he or she is still going to Hell. For the flesh and the unrenewed mind the fact that the Blood Covenant is immutable is at times very inconvenient. All flesh is subject to the Word of God. Since rebelling against God has no upside and obedience has no downside lets be the best sons and daughters we can be to our Heavenly Father. I will pickup with criterion five of blood covenants next Sunday.
Until our next publication, I speak blessing into your life right now, receive it in the name of Jesus, confess it, and walk it out with thanksgiving.
Numbers 6:24-26 (KJV)
24 The LORD bless thee, and keep thee:
25 The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:
26 The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.
