THE BLESSING OF JACOB AND ESAU
Friday – May 4, 2018, Iyar 19, 5778

Greetings and welcome back to this wonderful faith building Bible Study from the faith Book and the faith chapter. The picture today is to illustrate Isaac whose eyes were dim blessing Jacob. As we delve into our study, first let’s read aloud our primary text.
Hebrews 11:20-22 (KJV)
20 By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.
21 By faith Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshipped, leaning upon the top of his staff.
22 By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones.
I left off yesterday with Esau despising his birthright which is the double portion of the first-born male. Now Jacob’s mother Rebekah is conspiring for Jacob to get the blessing of the first-born.
Genesis 27:6-8 (KJV)
6 And Rebekah spake unto Jacob her son, saying, Behold, I heard thy father speak unto Esau thy brother, saying,
7 Bring me venison, and make me savoury meat, that I may eat, and bless thee before the LORD before my death.
8 Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to that which I command thee.
Genesis 27:21-29 (KJV)
21 And Isaac said unto Jacob, Come near, I pray thee, that I may feel thee, my son, whether thou be my very son Esau or not.
22 And Jacob went near unto Isaac his father; and he felt him, and said, The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.
23 And he discerned him not, because his hands were hairy, as his brother Esau’s hands: so he blessed him.
24 And he said, Art thou my very son Esau? And he said, I am.
25 And he said, Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son’s venison, that my soul may bless thee. And he brought it near to him, and he did eat: and he brought him wine, and he drank.
26 And his father Isaac said unto him, Come near now, and kiss me, my son.
27 And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his raiment, and blessed him, and said, See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the LORD hath blessed:
28 Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine:
29 Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee: be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother’s sons bow down to thee: cursed be every one that curseth thee, and blessed be he that blesseth thee.
Jacob at the urging and direction of his mother Rebekah stole the blessing which in the natural belonged to Esau (look back to Genesis 25:23) however was destined for Jacob due to the lack of honor Esau had for the Blood Covenant. Note that once the words of the blessing are released they cannot be taken back. You can see that this blessing is very much like what God said to Abraham in Genesis chapter twelve. The blessing is simply a decree or series of decree’s spoken into a person’s life. They are spoken in faith by the one blessing. As we saw in the primary text Isaac spoke by faith what was to come in the lives of Jacob and Esau. The blessing can be hindered or aborted by disobedience to God or not receiving the blessing in faith. Jacob goes on to father the twelve tribes of Israel. Esau was the father of the Edomites who were constantly at war with Israel. These folks are generally in the area of modern day Jordan and even today there is an uneasy peace between Jordan and Israel. As this Bible account moves on Esau returns from the field with the venison but the deed is done.
Genesis 27:36-40 (KJV)
36 And he said, Is not he rightly named Jacob? for he hath supplanted me these two times: he took away my birthright; and, behold, now he hath taken away my blessing. And he said, Hast thou not reserved a blessing for me?
37 And Isaac answered and said unto Esau, Behold, I have made him thy lord, and all his brethren have I given to him for servants; and with corn and wine have I sustained him: and what shall I do now unto thee, my son?
38 And Esau said unto his father, Hast thou but one blessing, my father? bless me, even me also, O my father. And Esau lifted up his voice, and wept.
39 And Isaac his father answered and said unto him, Behold, thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above;
40 And by thy sword shalt thou live, and shalt serve thy brother; and it shall come to pass when thou shalt have the dominion, that thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck.
As you examine verse thirty-nine in other translations you will see the picture that Esau and the Edomites will not dwell in the fatness of the earth nor the dew of Heaven. If you look at Jordan today, it has no real natural resources and is not a rich kingdom. You will notice in verse thirty-nine that Esau tells his father Isaac that Jacob took away his birthright but as we know that was not the case, Esau despised or thought little of his birthright. By our faith we have the Blessing at work in our lives or by unbelief we have the curse at work in our lives. Unbelief of God’s Word, Gods Blessing in and through Christ Jesus is faith in the curse and a turning aside to other gods.
Until our next publication, I speak this Scriptural prayer for your life right now, receive it in the name of Jesus, confess it, and walk it out with thanksgiving.
2 Peter 1:2-4 (KJV)
2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
