HEALTH, HEALING, AND MIRACLES – PART THIRTY-SEVEN
Sunday – November 18, 2018, Kislev 10, 5779
Greetings partners, friends, and visitors to this wonderful study of Health, Healing, and Miracles drawn from the earthly ministry of Christ Jesus. Always remember that health is God’s best and available to us without question. Maintaining good health is in our power. The Word of God is medicine to all our flesh and life to our whole being. I will start today talking about a Nobleman’s son. Let us review our primary Bible text reading it aloud.
John 4:46-54 (KJV)
46 So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.
47 When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death.
48 Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.
49 The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die.
50 Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way.
51 And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth.
52 Then enquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.
53 So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house.
54 This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judaea into Galilee.
In our account today we have a Nobleman, prominent citizen, of Capernaum who has traveled to Cana to ask Jesus to come and heal his son. It seems that the whereabouts of Jesus were widely known but we must also consider that Jesus most likely knows this nobleman since they live in the same town. I am sure the news about the miracle of water to wine was widely disseminated. Cana and Capernaum are about twenty miles apart so this man has walked a long way. On first read it seems that Jesus is quite rude to the man in verse forty-eight.
John 4:48 (KJV)
48 Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.
Jesus tells him you have to see something before you believe. Do you suppose Jesus is linking the water to wine with the reason for this man showing up? I don’t know with certainty but I think this statement above is a general statement that Jesus makes more than once in one form or another and is addressed to the surrounding crowd. Afterall this man has some degree of faith, he has walked twenty miles. The nobleman tells Jesus, you are my sons only hope. Jesus responds with a statement, “Go thy way; thy son liveth.” Jesus knew that faith was present in the father (the nobleman) of the boy. The man believed Jesus and left to return back home without Jesus. Do we have the same faith, do we believe Him when the Scripture says that by His stripes we were (already) healed? The nobleman had come to get Jesus to come to the house, but like the Centurion he believed if Jesus spoke the Word only it would be done. As we continue with our text it seems that the man may have stayed overnight before heading home as we examine verse fifty-two. The man already believed but through this his whole house came to believe on Jesus. As we finish for today let’s look at another healing.
Luke 22:47-51 (KJV)
47 And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him.
48 But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?
49 When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword?
50 And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.
51 And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him.
We can plainly see by context that this is the day Jesus was betrayed, and taken captive during the evening. His time was come, the time to be made sin and give us righteousness. Remember in the Bible and Hebrew culture the day starts at 6 pm until the next six pm. So, the evening (darkness) precedes the day (light). I am sure you can see many ways to go with that statement. In western culture the day starts at midnight so starts with night and ends with night. Review the creation account where this is exceedingly clear. One of Jesus’ disciples pulls a sword, my guess is Peter, and cuts off the High Priests servants’ ear. From the account it is not clear as to whether Jesus picked up the ear and reattached it or caused a new one to grow, in any event the healing, the restoration of the ear was instant meaning that time was set aside for a moment. Following this Jesus is taken before the High Priest, at the High Priests house, not the Temple.

26 And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.
