Greeting dear children of God and welcome back to this instructive study of the Bible Book of Haggai. The Lord is so good to give us a lamp for our feet, and light for our path (Psalm 119:105). Remember the words of the Apostle Paul.
Romans 15:4 (KJV)
4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
Romans 15:4 (NIV)
4 For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
Now, let’s turn to our primary Bible text reading out loud.
Haggai 1:7-11 (KJV)
7 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.
8 Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the LORD.
9 Ye looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? saith the LORD of hosts. Because of mine house that is waste, and ye run every man unto his own house.
10 Therefore the heaven over you is stayed from dew, and the earth is stayed from her fruit.
11 And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the corn, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil, and upon that which the ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labour of the hands.
The children of Israel have been released from bondage in Assyria and sent back to the land and Jerusalem and given all that was needed for the rebuilding of the Temple by King Cyrus of Persia. Now, some 18 years later little has been done to rebuild the Temple. The Lord is now challenging His people about building their own homes but snubbing His House. He tells them in verse five to consider their ways, recounted some examples of the curse operating in their lives then again tells them to consider their ways.
As we continue in our study the Lord gives them instruction to go to the mountain, cut wood, and build His house. He assures them He will be pleased and He will be glorified. The word translated here as glorified is much more commonly translated as honor or in this case honored. Consider the following verse.
1 Samuel 2:30 (KJV)
30 Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.
The Hebrew word transliterated to English and finally translated to English as honor means to be heavy as in of high value or quality or powerful. Do you want to be powerful? Honor God.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here with our study of Haggai next Saturday. The Lord is good, He is not the source of our problems, and He cannot lie!
