Greetings dear children of God and welcome back to this enlightening and empowering study of the Bible Book of Haggai. It is enlightening if we have eyes to see and ears to hear. Are we reading today to understand and do? Now, let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text reading out loud.
Haggai 1:12-15 (KJV)
12 Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him, and the people did fear before the LORD.
13 Then spake Haggai the LORD’S messenger in the LORD’S message unto the people, saying, I am with you, saith the LORD.
14 And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work in the house of the LORD of hosts, their God,
15 In the four and twentieth day of the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.
As you will recall from prior weeks the people of God have returned from exile in Assyria by the decree of King Cyrus. Now, some 18 years later the Temple is still in ruin while they are focused on their own homes not that of the Lord. The Lord through His Prophet Haggai in previous verses has explained this is why they are living well below His plan for them. Their focus, priorities are in the wrong place; therefore, He cannot bless them. What about our priorities and motivations? Does the following verse come to mind?
Matthew 6:33 (KJV)
33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
These ancient Israelites were not putting God first and therefore were not walking in the Blessing of Abraham. What about you and me? As we examine the twelfth verse of our text, we find Zerubbabel the Governor and Joshua the High Priest, as well as the people obeying the voice of the Lord through the Prophet Haggai. They had a change of heart first than a change in what they were doing. As we move on, let’s first take a look at the phrase “the people did fear before the LORD”. This word transliterated from Hebrew to English is yārēʾ a verb meaning to fear, to respect, to reverence, to be afraid, to be awesome, to be feared, to make afraid, to frighten according to The Complete Word Study Dictionary – Old Testament. In the context of our study, it seems to me that they started to give the Lord His proper respect and reverence. Then, in verse thirteen, after the people turned their hearts towards God as a priority, the Lord assures them that He is with them. How many know that it is way better to have the Lord with you than not?
Lord willing, I will pick up right here with our study of Haggai next Saturday. The Lord is good, He is not the source of our problems, and He cannot lie!
