RIGHTEOUSNESS – PART TWO
Greeting dear ones and welcome back to the Sunday Bible Study here at Awake, Arise, and Triumph Ministries, and The Three Minute Word blog. I am currently exploring the word, the idea, of righteousness (feminine noun), having a righteous (adjective) character in the Old Testament. Last Sunday we reviewed righteous, the adjective. Let’s look at that definition again, and then move on. According to The Complete Word Study Dictionary definition. “An adjective meaning just, righteous. The term bears primarily a moral or ethical significance. Someone or something is considered to be just or righteous because of conformity to a given standard. It could be used to describe people or actions in a legal context, indicating they were in accordance with the legal standards (2 Ki. 10:9); or in a religious context, that they were in accordance with God’s standards (Gen. 6:9).” Consider the following two verses.
Genesis 6:9 (KJV)
9 These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.
Here we see this word more commonly translated as righteous rendered as just. I hope we are all starting to see that being a just person, being a righteous person is closely related to justice. See a second example of the word in a verse.
2 Kings 10:9 (KJV)
9 And it came to pass in the morning, that he went out, and stood, and said to all the people, Ye be righteous: behold, I conspired against my master, and slew him: but who slew all these?
Let’s look at the Thesaurus to draw out just a bit more. In the Thesaurus the words fair, impartial, objective, unbiased, moral, ethical, and right. Antonyms include unjust, and wrong. Of course, we are talking about all these things according to God, and His Word which is always righteous, always right, impartial, just, and moral. He is the absolute unchanging standard.
Now, let’s switch over to the word righteousness in the Old Testament (Strong’s Number H6666 from the root H6663). In case you are not familiar with Strong’s Numbers from Strong’s Greek and Hebrew Dictionary, the H in front of the number stands for Hebrew. A New Testament word Strong’s Number would be preceded by a G standing for Greek. The Old Testament for the most part is written in Hebrew and the New Testament in Greek. First let’s look at a definition from The Complete Word Study Dictionary, Old Testament. Righteousness is a feminine noun meaning blameless conduct, and integrity. The noun describes justice, right actions, and right attitudes, as expected from both God and people when they judge.
Did you notice that now we are not just being blameless or right in relation to God and according to God, but now this includes right attitudes. Have you or have you ever seen a person say the right thing but their face, their attitude said something different? That is unrighteousness, which is sin.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here next Sunday with our study of righteousness. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
