RIGHTEOUSNESS – PART ONE
Greetings dear ones and welcome back to our Sunday Bible Study. Soon there will be a video companion for these written teachings, keep watch! Below in the “Contact Information” you will find a link to our YouTube channel currently in development.
Today I am going to tackle “righteousness”. This word is among what I call “Church Words”. We do hear this word outside of the Church, but way more often in Church, during “religious” meetings, or in conversations between Christians. There are other such words (Church words) like glory, grace, and hallelujah. When I did a search for the word “righteousness” in the Bible I found that it occurred 307 times in the King James Version of the Bible. The surprising thing to me was that it occurred 210 times in the Old Testament and 97 times in the New Testament. I guess the reason it was surprising has to do with the fact that it is commonly taught as a New Testament idea or reality. In addition, the word “righteous” (Hebrew Strong’s Number 6662) occurs 206 times in the Old Testament. Clearly being righteous and demonstrating righteousness is a whole Bible, God, reality for man.
The longer I study the Bible the more a realize that it is a unified whole not two completely separate Covenants. It seems that using the terms Old Covenant or Testament and New Covenant or Testament is a misnomer. It is all one covenant that was strengthened immeasurably (made better) by the coming of Christ. Righteousness is an integral part of Gods character and thus ours as well, for we are made in the image and likeness of God. By our God given freewill we choose righteousness or unrighteousness. Unrighteousness is sin, righteousness is acting like our Maker, God. I got a little off course, perhaps we will examine this further in the future, but now back to righteous and righteousness. The word “righteous” Strong’s Number 6662 is an adjective. The following is first mention of Strong’s Number 6662 more commonly translated as righteous but translated as “just” in this instance.
Genesis 6:8-12 (KJV)
8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.
9 These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God. (bold added)
10 And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.
12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.
The word “just” in verse nine could and perhaps should be translated as righteous. Noah was a man. What type of man was he? He was a just, a righteous man. The word “perfect” in this ninth verse means to be without blemish or blameless. As I end for today, let’s look at The Complete Word Study Dictionary definition. “An adjective meaning just, righteous. The term bears primarily a moral or ethical significance. Someone or something is considered to be just or righteous because of conformity to a given standard. It could be used to describe people or actions in a legal context, indicating they were in accordance with the legal standards (2 Ki. 10:9); or in a religious context, that they were in accordance with God’s standards (Gen. 6:9).”
Lord willing, I will pick up this study right here next Sunday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
