BY FAITH HE KEPT THE PASSOVER
Thursday – May 24, 2018, Sivan 10, 5778

Thank you so much for rejoining this wonderful and powerful Bible Study from the Book of Hebrew building the faith of the diligent day by day. For a moment let’s examine ourselves and be brutally honest in this examination, judging, ourselves determining if we are checking off boxes or are we incorporating this Word into our lives. To incorporate it means that we are thinking different, we are talking different, and we are acting different. Areas where perhaps we did not have faith previously now is strong in faith and therefore we are acting and moving the Kingdom forward in that area for the first time or with greater efficiency. Next, let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text as we move forward in our study.
Hebrews 11:28-29 (KJV)
28 Through faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them.
29 By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned.
As you recall we are still dealing with Moses and faith. We have seen that there were times that Moses moved in great faith and times when Moses moved in his own strength. We have determined that we want to follow after or be led by our faith in God. As we like Moses start to understand the call of God in our lives we have to be careful to patiently follow after the Holy Spirit and not be a bull in the proverbial china closet. The wording of the twenty-eighth verse above is interesting saying that “through faith he kept the passover”. Other translations put it more like this one.
Hebrews 11:28 (HCSB)
28 By faith he instituted the Passover and the sprinkling of the blood, so that the destroyer of the firstborn might not touch the Israelites.
So, did Moses keep the Passover or institute the Passover? Really both. The Passover has existed since the Day of Sin in the Garden of Eden however Moses at the direction of the Holy Spirit codified it and it became a Feast of the Lord. We have known from the time of Noah that life is in the blood, we now know and some of them knew then that eternal life was in the Blood of Christ. Just think of Abraham when he was tested and looked into the future (saw afar off) seeing the sacrifice of the Lamb of God for sin and the return of eternal life. That was the gospel that the Scripture preached unto him. The blood of that innocent animal protected the Israelites that night and brought them out of bondage. So too the Blood of our Passover Lamb has brought us out of bondage, captivity, into the Kingdom of Light, redeemed, sins removed never to be remember by God, and given eternal life.
Our primary text goes on to tell us that by faith they passed through the Red Sea on dry land. When the Egyptians tried to follow they were swallowed up and the most powerful army on earth ceased to exist. A great empire came to naught. Let’s take a closer look at the crossing of the Red Sea as we bring this study of Moses and faith to an end.
Exodus 14:5-7 (KJV)
5 And it was told the king of Egypt that the people fled: and the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was turned against the people, and they said, Why have we done this, that we have let Israel go from serving us?
6 And he made ready his chariot, and took his people with him:
7 And he took six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, and captains over every one of them.
When the shock of the death of the firstborn in all of Egypt of both man and beast subsided Pharaoh had a change of heart and decides to go after the Israelites and bring them back. He realizes that they are an intricate part of the economy of Egypt and they left with much of its wealth. What happens next?
Exodus 14:10-14 (KJV)
10 And when Pharaoh drew nigh, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and, behold, the Egyptians marched after them; and they were sore afraid: and the children of Israel cried out unto the LORD.
11 And they said unto Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt?
12 Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness.
13 And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.
14 The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.
Are there no graves in Egypt? Leave us alone to serve the Egyptians. Has a sinner, perhaps even yourself, ever said leave me alone in my sin? The Israelites were very afraid but Moses tells them you have got to overcome the fear. Only in the absence of fear will the Egyptians be defeated and no longer be a factor. In the absence of fear and obedience to God, the LORD, the Holy Spirit will handle the situation with great efficiency. You know the story, when the Israelites stood still, did not run, and did not surrender to the enemy they passed through the Red Sea on dry ground however the Egyptians all died in the Red Sea. Tomorrow Lord willing I will pick up with the Faith Hall of Fame, Joshua, faith, and Jericho.
Until our next publication, I speak this Scriptural prayer for your life right now, receive it in the name of Jesus, confess it, and walk it out with thanksgiving.
