LIFT THIS SIN AND CARRY IT AWAY

Welcome saint and sinner alike to this new Bible Teaching on forgiveness and unforgiveness. There are many sins, things contrary to the Word of God, the ways of God, but it seems that unforgiveness is especially vile in the sight of God. Evil enough to change the course of our lives now and our destination later. Perhaps that is so, for when we don’t forgive it is a violation of our Blood Covenant with the Father. Our relationship with other people, including ourselves, is to mirror how He interacts with others, saint and sinner alike. If He is willing to forgive us, and those we have not yet forgiven, we must be willing to forgive them. This is the Law of Reciprocity. Now, let’s look at the first Scripture that actually uses the word forgive.
Genesis 50:17 (KJV)
17 So shall ye say unto Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the trespass of thy brethren, and their sin; for they did unto thee evil: and now, we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spake unto him.
The word forgive translated to English from Hebrew here is transliterated as nāśāʾ, a verb meaning to lift, to carry, to take away according to The Complete Word Study Dictionary – Old Testament. When we ask forgiveness of others or God, we are asking them to lift the sin off of us and carry it away. This means it is no longer a factor in the relationship. When we forgive and when we are forgiven, we are to no longer think about the trespass or talk about it. It is a fresh start as if it never happened. Do I know this is not easy for either party? Yes! Now, an example of unforgiveness early in Scripture. Keep in mind we forgive when the offense occurs not when a person asks forgiveness.
Genesis 4:23 (AMP)
23 Lamech said to his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; you wives of Lamech, listen to what I say; for I have slain a man [merely] for wounding me, and a young man [only] for striking and bruising me.
Lamech is the great grandson of Cain the man who murdered his brother Abel. The seed, the spirit murder, the spirit of Satan a murdered from the beginning, is in this lineage. Lamech’s life was not in danger, he did not kill in self-defense. Rather than forgiving these men, and moving on, he killed them apparently feeling rather justified in himself. When the law was codified, we see that they and we are commanded not to harbor a grudge.
Leviticus 19:18 (ESV)
18 You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.
This did not become a law or sin when transgressed when it was written but has been sin from the foundation of the world and before. This law did not go away at Calvary by the way. Our old nature (before salvation) wants to take vengeance but that is not the way of God, so, is not our way. According to the Thesaurus, a grudge is a complaint, rancor, bitterness, resentment, or hatred towards the one who offended us. The Lord will decide in the end what is appropriate justice. We are commanded to love our neighbor. Why? Because the Lord loves them and we treat them as He treats them. This is Blood Covenant (with God). Is this easy, no, not at first. It has to do with who is first, who do we love, who do we worship, who is our god. I will now share a Scripture that may be hard on our flesh.
Micah 7:18 (ESV)
18 Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance? He does not retain his anger forever, because he delights in steadfast love.
Can we honestly apply this Scripture to ourselves? Do we delight in loving all others, not just selected others, in pardoning iniquity and passing over transgressions? This is probably all we can take for today.
TAKE HOME:
- Forgiving is not optional. Failure to forgive, on the spot, is sin. Thinking about and/or talking about the trespass is sin especially after forgiving or being forgiven.
- Bearing a grudge is unforgiveness and sin.
- We are to delight in loving all others, in forgiving others.
Lord willing, I will resume right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
