UNFORGIVENESS BLOCKS THE BLESSING

Welcome back saint and sinner alike to this Bible Teaching on forgiveness and unforgiveness. There are many sins, things contrary to the Word of God, the ways of God, but it seems that unforgiveness is especially vile in the sight of God. Evil enough to change the course of our lives now and our destination later. Failure to forgive is a violation of our Blood Covenant with the Father. Our relationship with other people, including ourselves, is to mirror how He interacts with others, saint and sinner alike. If He is willing to forgive us, and those we have not yet forgiven, we must be willing to forgive them. This is the Law of Reciprocity.
As we move forward with these teachings there is something we will be exploring at some length. Perhaps we have all heard when God forgives our sin that He cannot remember it and if we bring it up, He has no idea what we are talking about. This may not be the Truth. It may be more that He, God, chooses not to be mindful of our sin and sees us as He sees Jesus. The Scripture tells us that as He, Jesus, is, so are we in this world (1 John 4:17). The Father sees us through the one who bore the punishment for our sin that we could be dead to sin and live to righteousness (1 Peter 2:24). Let’s push forward in our study of being forgiven and forgiving. When we understand God’s forgiveness of us, we can understand what it means for us to forgive someone or be forgiven by someone. Let’s listen to the Words of our Lord on the topic of forgiving others.
Matthew 6:14-15 (ESV)
14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you,
15 but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
It seems to me that unforgiveness is common in the body of Christ. I am talking about true forgiveness not lip service. When a person has not truly forgiven you hear unforgiveness in the tone of their voice, facial expressions, and body language. So, what does it mean when it says, if we don’t forgive others our Heavenly Father won’t forgive us? Unrepented and unforgiven sin is an open door to the curse, the demons who come only to steal, kill, and destroy. What the Father does for us we must in turn be willing and in fact do for Him. When He obeys Scripture and forgives us, we must be willing to obey the command to forgive others. It is a Blood Covenant obligation. Earlier in this chapter also part of what we call “The Lords Prayer” we find this.
Matthew 6:9-13 (ESV)
9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.
10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread,
12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
When we are harboring unforgiveness is His Kingdom going to come and His will be done on the earth in and through you? No, we are already in rebellion, out of His will, behaving in a way contrary to the Kingdom of God, harboring unforgiveness. Are we going to receive Heaven’s provision? No! Are we going to see from Him ways to master temptations? No! The cost of unforgiveness is very high.
The Apostle Doctor Luke writes about this as well.
Luke 6:36-37 (ESV)
36 Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.
37 “Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven;
I am sure that you like me, see these as tall orders. They go against our flesh, but we are to be dead to the flesh and alive to righteousness. Again, we see that if we don’t forgive, we will not be forgiven. Again, this is an open door for the thief who comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. If we have unforgiveness towards another we can come to God with tears and brokenness of heart for what we have done and remain uncleansed. In this state the door is open to the curse and the blessing is not operating in our lives, we are living as the world lives.
TAKE HOME:
- When we do not forgive others, our Heavenly Father will not forgive us. We are in breach of our Blood Covenant with Him. Breach of Blood Covenant demands death.
- When we ask for forgiveness, we must not be harboring unforgiveness towards another.
- Unforgiveness is an open door to the curse, the thief, life as the world has life, and blocks the abundant life Jesus came to give us.
Lord willing, I will resume right here next week. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
