Welcome sons of God to this ongoing study of the Bible Book of James. I see this Bible Book as generally straight forward and practical. Please be sure you have come with ears to hear and eyes to see. Once you or I hear and see we must be prepared to implement this fresh revelation and walk in the light of our new understanding. Now, to our lengthy text in the second chapter of James.
James 2:1-13 (KJV)
1 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.
2 For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;
3 And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:
4 Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?
5 Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?
6 But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?
7 Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?
8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:
9 But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.
10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.
12 So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.
13 For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.
Today I am focused on verse eight of our text, fulfilling the royal law, loving our neighbor as ourselves. James is drawing from what is written in the Law and perhaps he had heard Jesus discuss this.
Leviticus 19:18 (KJV)
18 Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.
When we obey this, we are obeying all the law.
Galatians 5:14 (KJV)
14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
There was a day in the earthly Ministry of Jesus when He was asked what’s the greatest law and this was His answer.
Matthew 22:36-40 (KJV)
36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
This love is divine love (agapē/agapaō) which we possess given of the Father. How do we love our neighbor as ourselves. Our expression of love to God is obeying Scripture, being selfless, and walking in Blood Covenant with the Father (treating people the way He does). This is how we love ourselves, anything else is self-hatred. We love our neighbor by treating them the way Scripture tells us. We love our neighbor by interacting with them in a selfless manner, not what we can get from them. And because our Father is no respecter of persons, we must not be a respecter of persons as part of our loving our neighbor.
TAKE HOME:
- The Royal Law is the Law of Love, loving God and loving our neighbor as ourselves.
- We love our neighbor by interacting with them according to Scripture, in a selfless manner, and cognizant of our Covenant with our Heavenly Father. We love ourselves in the same manner.
- On this Royal Law, the Law of Love, hangs all of the Law and all the Prophets.
Lord willing, I will resume right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
