FAITH – WORKS – LOVE

Welcome sons of God to this ongoing study of the Bible Book of James. I see this Bible Book as generally straight forward and practical. Please be sure you have come with ears to hear and eyes to see. Once you or I hear and see we must be prepared to implement this fresh revelation and walk in the light of our new understanding.
The next several verses of the second chapter of James deals with faith and works. It is not faith alone, nor is it by works alone, it is by the partnership of the two. Now, to our text for today.
James 2:14-17 (KJV)
14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?
15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,
16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?
17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
So, what is the answer to verse fourteen. It is NO! Perhaps you have heard the assertion that “it is by faith alone”. That is a false belief although widely held as are many other sacred cows. Consider the following Scripture describing the path to salvation.
Romans 10:9-10 (KJV)
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
We see it is a combination of believing (faith) in our heart and saying (works) with our mouth. Faith and works brings salvation and every other promise of God. Earlier in this very book of James we found the following verse.
James 1:25 (KJV)
25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
Here we see that the promises do not manifest (blessing) by love alone nor hear the Word of God but in the doing of the Word of God. Faith and love are intimate and necessary companions.
Galatians 5:6 (KJV)
6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.
Our faith cannot produce any greater than the love (agapē/agapaō) underpinning it. And the focus of faith does not manifest until we do something, the thing called for in a situation. Now, let’s consider the following verses from our text.
James 2:15-16 (KJV)
15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,
16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?
This does not mean that we don’t properly evaluate the need, but when we know by firsthand knowledge or Word of Knowledge, we are called upon by the Lord to act. You are not aware and brought to this situation by some accident or Satan. Satan will never tempt you to do good.
1 John 3:17 (KJV)
17 But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
TAKE HOME:
- Salvation is obtained by faith (believing) and works (saying) as is everything else in the Kingdom powered of love.
- When we are brought to a brother or sister in need and we have the means we are to act not just share a prayer and a pat on the back.
- Love, faith, and works are necessary companions.
Lord willing, I will resume right here Monday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
