Welcome sons of God to this ongoing study of the Bible Book of James. I see this Bible Book as generally straight forward and practical. Please be sure you have come with ears to hear and eyes to see. Once you or I hear and see we must be prepared to implement this fresh revelation and walk in the light of our new understanding. Now, to our lengthy text for today.
James 2:1-13 (KJV)
1 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.
2 For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;
3 And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:
4 Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?
5 Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?
6 But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?
7 Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?
8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:
9 But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.
10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.
12 So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.
13 For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.
As we start to learn from this passage I want to remind us that James the Just is writing to Jews but in Christ Jesus Jew and Gentile are one people, the Church. The whole passage is revolving around the command not to be a respecter of persons. Today we don’t tend to use this term, being a respecter of persons, except in religious circles. This term has to do with treating one person different than another based on their station at the moment in life, like rich or poor. This is something the Jewish people should have already known, and the Gentiles would need to be educated about. Let’s start by looking at the first verse in the New International Version.
James 2:1 (NIV)
1 My brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don’t show favoritism.
The Apostle Paul reminds all that God, our Father, our Savior, and our Teacher/Helper is not a respecter of persons.
Romans 2:11 (KJV)
11 For there is no respect of persons with God.
This is not new information about God, let’s look at a couple of passages before we wrap it up for the day.
Leviticus 19:15 (KJV)
15 Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment: thou shalt not respect the person of the poor, nor honour the person of the mighty: but in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbour.
Deuteronomy 1:17 (KJV)
17 Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; but ye shall hear the small as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God’s: and the cause that is too hard for you, bring it unto me, and I will hear it.
Applying the same judgement to all is the will of God and the way of God and thus must be our way as well. This is all in the context of His expression of Divine love, agapaō (the verb form) and our expression of this same love (verse eight).
TAKE HOME:
- Once we come to faith in Christ Jesus partiality or being a respecter of persons is unrighteousness which is sin.
- Divine love, agapaō, makes no provision for partiality. This love is obedience to Scripture, selflessness, and abiding in Blood Covenant with the Father. He’s not a respecter so we must not be a respecter else we are breaking covenant.
- We do not treat people differently based on their station in life.
Lord willing, I will resume right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
