BRIDLE THE TONGUE PLEASE THE FATHER

Welcome sons of God to this ongoing study of the Bible Book of James. I see this Bible Book as generally straight forward and practical. Please be sure you have come with ears to hear and eyes to see. Once you or I hear and see we must be prepared to implement this fresh revelation and walk in the light of our new understanding. Now, to our text for today.
James 1:26-27 (KJV)
26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.
27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
For perhaps a little better insight into what the Holy Spirit is telling us through James lets look at the Message Bible.
James 1:26-27 (MSG)
26 Anyone who sets himself up as “religious” by talking a good game is self-deceived. This kind of religion is hot air and only hot air.
27 Real religion, the kind that passes muster before God the Father, is this: Reach out to the homeless and loveless in their plight, and guard against corruption from the godless world.
I suspect many of us have met these people. Our job is to pray for them and set the example of true Christian living in private and in public. Again, James is talking about our tongue, the words of our mouth, and this will arise again in chapter three. There are those among us who know how to act and what to say around Christians and this applies to pulpit and pew alike. Yes, there are those in the pulpit who know how to act like a Christian and do the functions of a Church but don’t have a personal relationship with Jesus. Many talk a good game but are not doing Kingdom of God work. Remember this passage.
Proverbs 10:19-21 (KJV)
19 In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.
20 The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth.
21 The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for want of wisdom.
I don’t know about you, but I want to be among the righteous who nourish many with their words. Scripture tells us that our tongue, our words are life and death.
Proverbs 18:21 (KJV)
21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
What about preaching sacred cows, doctrine of demons, and traditions of men as Truth from the pulpit? This is happening all around us and much of the Church does not see it and think this must all be the will of God one way or another. Church wake up! Let’s listen to Jesus.
Matthew 12:34-37 (KJV)
34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.
36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
You see our tongues speaking the things we believe bring the good, the bad, and the ugly into our lives and the earth. Words we speak and don’t believe are called idle words we will called to account for at the judgement. Let’s bridle our tongues and do the work of the Kingdom that pleases the Father.
TAKE HOME:
- There are those among us that seem religious but are not.
- These seemingly religious persons are marked by many empty (idle, vain) words producing nothing for the Kingdom mixed with pride.
- Let us decide to bridle our tongues speaking and doing what pleases the Father avoiding being loquacious (chatty) which results in sin.
Lord willing, I will resume right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
