THE MERCY SEAT AND THE CHERUBIMS
Wednesday – January 10, 2018

O the Word of God is so wonderful! This is just not masterfully written prose to make us feel better. These are Words that create reality both physical and spiritual. The Word of God created all physical (and spiritual) reality and the Word of God, which is spirit, upholds and maintains all physical (and spiritual) reality. All physical and spiritual realities are created by words and are changed by words within the framework of the spiritual and physical laws established by God. Now let us review the primary text for this wonderful Bible Study from the Book of Hebrews.
Hebrews 9:1-7 (KJV)
1 Then verily the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary.
2 For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread; which is called the sanctuary.
3 And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all;
4 Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron’s rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant;
5 And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat; of which we cannot now speak particularly.
6 Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God.
7 But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people:
Today I will be shifting our focus to the “mercyseat” found in Hebrews 9:5. Five is the number of God’s Grace and Goodness, with nine being the number of Divine Completeness, and nineteen (Hebrews is the 19th Book of the New Testament) being the number of faith. I tell you, our God, is just something! As we delve into this wonderful passage let us take a look at God’s original instructions.
Exodus 25:19-20 (KJV)
19 And make one cherub on the one end, and the other cherub on the other end: even of the mercy seat shall ye make the cherubims on the two ends thereof.
20 And the cherubims shall stretch forth their wings on high, covering the mercy seat with their wings, and their faces shall look one to another; toward the mercy seat shall the faces of the cherubims be.
As you look at the featured picture today you can see these verses illustrated. Now, we have seen these cherubs or cherubims before.
Genesis 3:24 (KJV)
24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.
In the day that man sinned he was driven from the garden of Eden by Cherubims to keep sinful man from partaking of the tree of life (eternal life). Lucifer (called Satan, the Devil, the Serpent, and the Dragon since sin was found in him) was a cherub (Ezekiel 28:14). Cherub’s or cherubims are mentions often in Scripture. These are created spiritual creatures. It appears that they have a protective and likely combat function with regard to God, the presence of God, and the provisions of God. Before Lucifer’s fall, he was one of the cherubs that covered the throne of God. The picture that was in the Tabernacle and later the Temple is an image of what we will see in Heaven with at least two Cherubims over and round about the Throne of God. By the way Jesus is seated there at the right hand of Majesty on High and so are you and I in Him.
Ezekiel 28:14 (KJV)
14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.
Now let us turn our attention to the Mercy Seat itself. Unlike the remainder of the Ark of the Covenant the cover or Mercy Seat has no shittim wood but is of pure gold only. Mercy is granted by the One who is pure to the one who is not pure. The mercy of God makes us pure. The terms of the Covenant that God has with those who believe is ever present speaking of His and our obligations (responsibilities) and privileges under this Covenant. The picture of the Most Holy Place was certainly a place of mercy for those under the Old Covenant and it prophesied of a better day to come. More on this tomorrow.
Until our next publication, I speak blessing into your life right now, receive it in the name of Jesus, confess it, and walk it out with thanksgiving.
Numbers 6:24-26 (KJV)
24 The LORD bless thee, and keep thee:
25 The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:
26 The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.
