HE GAVE HIM TITHES OF ALL

Greetings to one and all and welcome back to this wonderful study of the Bible character Melchizedek. We are learning much! The Bible, each verse, is packed with hidden treasure as we have found as we have delved into the Genesis text where Melchizedek first appears. We have seen the foretelling of our Jubilee, our Passover Lamb, warnings to discern between messengers of Satan and God, as well as the reality of being joint heirs with God. Now we come to a real popular item (sarcasm), the tithe.
Genesis 14:18-20 (KJV)
18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
19 And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:
20 And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.
Many try to make the tithe a controversy and exclaim that it was only for the people of the Old Testament. God does not change and He didn’t change with what is called the New Testament. It is one testament now sealed with eternal Blood instead of animal blood. Are there things we no longer do but commemorate? Yes! For example, the sacrificial laws no longer apply for they are fulfilled in Christ Jesus but we continue to remember, memorialize, and will forever (His Words not mine).
The word tithe means 10% or a tenth. When did the tithe start? It didn’t start when it was codified in Leviticus or with Abram in Genesis chapter fourteen. It started in the Garden of Eden. The tree of the knowledge of good and evil was the tithe. This tree, the knowledge of good and evil belonged to the Lord, and they were not to touch, partake, it. When they did, the curse ensued. And so, it will be in our lives if we do not tithe. Stealing from God is never a good idea. First let’s go to the codification (organization, explaining) of the tithe.
Leviticus 27:30-33 (KJV)
30 And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD’S: it is holy unto the LORD.
31 And if a man will at all redeem ought of his tithes, he shall add thereto the fifth part thereof.
32 And concerning the tithe of the herd, or of the flock, even of whatsoever passeth under the rod, the tenth shall be holy unto the LORD.
33 He shall not search whether it be good or bad, neither shall he change it: and if he change it at all, then both it and the change thereof shall be holy; it shall not be redeemed.
Notice the tithe, the tenth of all increase, belongs to the Lord not to us. A person can use the tithe for another purpose, short term, but then given or returned to the Lord with a fifth added. Notice that it is not the first one under the rod but the tenth one that is the tithe. In the case of an agricultural tithe, we are not to judge if it be good or bad, the tenth one belongs to the Lord in spite of its quality. Remember the Lord changes not, His will then is His will today. Now, to the oft quoted Scripture in Malachi.
Malachi 3:6-12 (KJV)
6 For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.
7 Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the LORD of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return?
8 Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.
9 Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.
10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.
11 And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts.
12 And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the LORD of hosts.
In verse six God declares that he changes not. Do you suppose He changed His mind with the very next Bible Book? God says that when we don’t tithe and give offerings, we are robbing Him. How many think that robbing God is a great idea? Not tithing brings the curse into our lives. It’s right there in the Scripture. Then because we are in Blood Covenant with God the Law of Reciprocity is activated. When we see that there is provision for His House He sees to it there is provision for our house. In addition, He rebukes the devourer, the one who comes to steal, kill, and destroy. Additionally, we become a testimony to others. Did Jesus mention the tithe and repudiate it?
Matthew 23:23 (NIV)
23 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices–mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law–justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.
Jesus rebuked the teachers of the law and Pharisees for not being just, for not showing mercy, and lacking faithfulness but confirmed the tithe (also in Luke 11)!
TAKE HOME:
- The Tithe, what belongs to God, started in the Garden of Eden and that knowledge was carried forward from that point and codified by Moses.
- Failing to tithe and give offerings is robbing God.
- The tithe is for today, it assures the blessing, it assures provision for the earthly house of God and for our earthly house.
As the Lord wills, I will resume right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
