WHAT ABOUT MELCHIZEDEK? PART TEN

NOT BY INHERITANCE BUT BY GOD’S APPOINTMENT

Greetings to one and all and welcome back to this wonderful study of the Bible character Melchizedek. We are learning much! The Bible, each verse, is packed with hidden treasure as we have found as we have delved into the Genesis text where Melchizedek first appears. We have seen the foretelling of our Jubilee, our Passover Lamb, warnings to discern between messengers of Satan and God, as well as the reality of being joint heirs with God. Yesterday we studied the really popular topic of the tithe. Today we will move forward to the next mention.

Psalm 110:1-7 (NJB)

1 Of David Psalm Yahweh declared to my Lord, ‘Take your seat at my right hand, till I have made your enemies your footstool.’

2 Yahweh will stretch out the sceptre of your power; from Zion you will rule your foes all around you.

3 Royal dignity has been yours from the day of your birth, sacred honour from the womb, from the dawn of your youth.

4 Yahweh has sworn an oath he will never retract, you are a priest for ever of the order of Melchizedek.

5 At your right hand, Lord, he shatters kings when his anger breaks out.

6 He judges nations, heaping up corpses, he breaks heads over the whole wide world.

7 He drinks from a stream as he goes, and therefore he holds his head high.

I have presented the whole of Psalm 110 in the New Jerusalem Bible because it brings forth a beautiful picture of the Father and the Son as well as the comparison of the Son with Melchizedek. This is quoted in part in the first chapter of the Book of Hebrews as well as the 5^th, 6^th, and 7^th chapters. These are the Words the Father spoke in restoring the Son, Jesus the Messiah come in the flesh, to the second person of God. What about the phrase referring to Jesus “you are a priest for ever of the order of Melchizedek”? Now, to the 5^th chapter of the Bible Book of Hebrews.

Hebrews 5:6 (KJV)

6 As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

As noted in verse six this was prophesied by the Prophet and King David in the 110^th Psalm. The Father is declaring that Jesus is to be a priest, our High Priest, forever “after the order of Melchisedec”. We have established that Melchisedec was a human historical figure, so he was not a high priest forever. So, what is the Scripture talking about? This is mentioned many times in Scripture so we must have His insight.

Hebrews 5:10 (KJV)

10 Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec.

It seems to me that the key is in the word “order”. The basic meaning of this word is to arrange or arrangement. It can also mean classification or rank. This would be High Priest. Notice Jesus was called of God a High Priest just like Melchisedec was called of God a High Priest. Not appointed by man but by God and a Priest of the highest order. Neither Melchizedek or Jesus became High Priest by birth or natural inheritance.

Hebrews 7:19-21 (AMP)

19 For the Law never made anything perfect—but instead a better hope is introduced through which we [now] come close to God.

20 And it was not without the taking of an oath [that Christ was made Priest],

21 For those who formerly became priests received their office without its being confirmed by the taking of an oath by God, but this One was designated and addressed and saluted with an oath, The Lord has sworn and will not regret it or change His mind, You are a Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

As an aside, many believe that the Apostle Paul is the writer of Hebrews. One well known minister in word of faith circles said that the Lord told him in a vision that Paul wrote the Bible Book of Hebrews. It has been my opinion that the Bible Book of Hebrews was not written by the Apostle Paul. The main reason I came to that conclusion was that the salutation and valediction was completely different than any of the Books of which he was clearly the human author. This is not an issue to war over or be an obstacle to fellowship in my view.

This concludes our study of Melchizedek, not that more could not be said but it seems that the Lord has expressed through me what He had for us at this time.

TAKE HOME:

Melchizedek was a real historical human person, not a preincarnate Christ, not Shem by a different name, but a type and shadow of the One to come. We will meet Melchizedek one day in Heaven.
Neither Melchizedek nor Jesus were a High Priest by birth or inheritance.
After the order of Melchizedek means called or appointed of God not man and of the highest rank. In the case of Jesus High Priest of the Ekklesia forever.
Hebrews 7:20-22 (MSG) 20 The old priesthood of Aaron perpetuated itself automatically, father to son, without explicit confirmation by God. 21 But then God intervened and called this new, permanent priesthood into being with an added promise: God gave his word; he won’t take it back: “You’re the permanent priest.” 22 This makes Jesus the guarantee of a far better way between us and God—one that really works! A new covenant.

As the Lord wills, I will resume right here next Saturday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
