MALCHUS EAR

TYPE AND SHADOW OF ISRAEL AND THE CHURCH

Greetings to one and all and welcome to this type and shadow of the Jewish people. A short while ago a friend of ours had visited a Church and heard a sermon about Malchus and Peter cutting his ear off. I began to think about that, and the following is what the Lord opened my eyes too write. This particular event is a type and shadow of a recurring theme in the history of the Jewish people and in the Church (Ekklesia) as well. Let’s take a look at the event and go from there. This event is recorded in all three gospels and we will first look at Luke’s account then John’s.

Luke 22:49-53 (KJV)

49 When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword?

50 And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.

51 And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him.

52 Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves?

53 When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.

This is the day that Jesus will hang on the Cross, they have just come from the “Last Supper”, Jesus has prayed while the disciples slept, and now Judas Iscariot the betrayer is come to take Jesus with the religious leaders, their servants, and soldiers. In the Matthew, Mark, and Luke accounts we are not told who cut off the ear of Malchus a servant of the High Priest. I think most of us would have guessed it was Peter and we would be right.

John 18:10-11 (KJV)

10 Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.

11 Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?

Malchus is the servant of the High Priest. Jesus is our High Priest and we are His servants. Has our ear been cut off, are we deaf, does the Church have ears to hear? This account is a picture of the deafness of the Jews especially the religious leaders in the time of Jesus. The only proof one needs is that they, unlike some of the people, did not recognize that Scripture was fulfilled in their time in there presence. The Messiah had come yet they did not recognize Him and sought to kill Him and do in fact kill Him that very day. Do we see this today, a blindness to what is God (Truth) and an acceptance of what is not of God, the traditions of men, doctrines of demons, and sacred cows instead?

What else can we take away from this account? Malchus was a servant of the High Priest, and we are servants of our High Priest, the Lord Jesus. They, the Jews were and are deaf for a season and the same is true of the Ekklesia (Church). But did you notice that Jesus restored hearing, the ear, of Malchus the servant of the High Priest? Healing is coming to the Jew and to the Church. First let’s look at the Ekklesia. Hearing is coming to the Church, and I believe soon when they will see, hear, and do the following verse rather than mindlessly recite it.

2 Chronicles 7:14 (KJV)

14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

What about the Jew?

Romans 11:24-27 (KJV)

24 For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be graffed into their own olive tree?

25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.

26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:

27 For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.

Blindness came to Israel, the Jews, in part to make way for the Gentiles, you and me, however the bigger part is their unbelief rejecting the Messiah which many do to this day. The day is at hand when that will all change. We will most likely be in Heaven but there will be a redemption, mercy for the Jewish peoples.

TAKE HOME:

Malchus represents the Jews and the Church.
The severance of the ear represents the deafness of both the Jew and Gentile to the Truth.
Healing is coming for both in Christ Jesus!
