THE BURDEN OF DAMASCUS

Greetings dear and precious saints of the Most High God and welcome back to this wonderful Scripture giving us revelation about the past and the coming Messiah (at that time). What a wonderful Book, what a wonderful God making all things known to His people. Please take a moment to share this teaching by every available means you have, that is so vital for you and for this Ministry. Thank you so much for sharing. Now, let’s continue to read out loud our primary Bible text from the wonderful and empowering Book of Isaiah. No silent reading!
Isaiah 17:1-5 (KJV)
1 The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.
2 The cities of Aroer are forsaken: they shall be for flocks, which shall lie down, and none shall make them afraid.
3 The fortress also shall cease from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus, and the remnant of Syria: they shall be as the glory of the children of Israel, saith the LORD of hosts.
4 And in that day it shall come to pass, that the glory of Jacob shall be made thin, and the fatness of his flesh shall wax lean.
5 And it shall be as when the harvestman gathereth the corn, and reapeth the ears with his arm; and it shall be as he that gathereth ears in the valley of Rephaim.
Verse one is fulfilled in the time of King Ahaz king of Judah. Aroer seems to be located in Israel (Jacob). Now, notice in verse four that “the glory of Jacob will be made thin”. Jacob as you will recall was renamed Israel, these are more or less synonymous terms. Now Ahaz paid (handsomely I might say) the king of Assyria to ravage Damascus, which he did. Rezin is a king in Syria who harassed Judah.
2 Kings 16:8-9 (KJV)
8 And Ahaz took the silver and gold that was found in the house of the LORD, and in the treasures of the king’s house, and sent it for a present to the king of Assyria.
9 And the king of Assyria hearkened unto him: for the king of Assyria went up against Damascus, and took it, and carried the people of it captive to Kir, and slew Rezin.
You will notice that Damascus (Syria) and Ephraim are mentioned in same breath back in the Isaiah 17 text. Back in Isaiah the 7th chapter we see that Syria and Ephraim (part of the ten tribes of Israel) were allies against Judah.
Isaiah 7:1-2 (KJV)
1 And it came to pass in the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up toward Jerusalem to war against it, but could not prevail against it.
2 And it was told the house of David, saying, Syria is confederate with Ephraim. And his heart was moved, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the wood are moved with the wind.
We will now move forward in this 17th Chapter.
Isaiah 17:6-8 (KJV)
6 Yet gleaning grapes shall be left in it, as the shaking of an olive tree, two or three berries in the top of the uppermost bough, four or five in the outmost fruitful branches thereof, saith the LORD God of Israel.
7 At that day shall a man look to his Maker, and his eyes shall have respect to the Holy One of Israel.
8 And he shall not look to the altars, the work of his hands, neither shall respect that which his fingers have made, either the groves, or the images.
Scripture goes on to tell us that what is left of Jacob in Ephraim will turn to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, their ‘Maker’. They will turn from the alters of their idols but to the One and Only Living God. We also must turn from our idols (other gods) to the One and Only Living God.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here tomorrow.
2 Chronicles 20:20 b (KJV)
20 … Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.
Receive the blessing in Jesus’ name!
Numbers 6:24-26 (MSG)
24 GOD bless you and keep you,
25 GOD smile on you and gift you,
26 GOD look you full in the face and make you prosper.
