RIGHTEOUSNESS

Greetings dear and precious saints, the redeemed of the Lord and welcome back to our study of the Bible Book of Isaiah. Please take a moment and share this and every teaching as widely as possible by every means available to you. The featured picture today is of the title page of the wonderful Book of Isaiah. Now, let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text for today and read it out loud. Yes, out loud, you know why.
Isaiah 57:6-9 (KJV)
6 Among the smooth stones of the stream is thy portion; they, they are thy lot: even to them hast thou poured a drink offering, thou hast offered a meat offering. Should I receive comfort in these?
7 Upon a lofty and high mountain hast thou set thy bed: even thither wentest thou up to offer sacrifice.
8 Behind the doors also and the posts hast thou set up thy remembrance: for thou hast discovered thyself to another than me, and art gone up; thou hast enlarged thy bed, and made thee a covenant with them; thou lovedst their bed where thou sawest it.
9 And thou wentest to the king with ointment, and didst increase thy perfumes, and didst send thy messengers far off, and didst debase thyself even unto hell.
Before we leave this area entirely, I wanted to return to righteous Lot for just a moment. You will recall that the people in this chapter who were dying early were being vexed it seems by the evil around about them like Lot of Sodom and Gomorrha. As we followed Lot’s history with Abram/Abraham and then in Sodom and Gomorrha he didn’t seem like a good candidate for the term righteousness. However, we then remembered that righteousness is imputed at salvation based on what Jesus did and not any of our actions. I wanted to bring the following passage to mind before moving forward.
2 Peter 2:5-8 (KJV)
5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;
6 And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly;
7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:
8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)
You will notice in this text and if you go back to the Genesis account it speaks of Noah being righteous but not anyone else yet his household were saved. Noah was the Covenant covering for his family. In like manner Abraham was the Covenant covering for his family which included Lot and Lots family. It is interesting that in Noah’s family eight were saved and eight were available to be saved in Lot’s family yet only four chose to go and one of those looked back (Lot’s wife) and turned to a pillar of salt. Eight is the number of new beginnings. In the case of Noah for the whole world, in Lot’s case their individual family. Unfortunately, Lot’s new beginning was in sin and so was that of Noah. Now, back to verse six of our primary text and the smooth stones in the stream.
1 Samuel 17:40 (KJV)
40 And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.
Immediately what came to mind was the account of David, the future king of Israel, and the confrontation with Goliath and the whole of the Philistine army. The Lord speaking to that wicked people vexing His people and says your portion is going to be the same as Goliath and the Philistines. You will recall that the Philistines that day suffered death and utter humiliation and so will those who vex God’s people.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here tomorrow. Remember the Lord loves you; His promises are yes and amen in Christ, and He cannot lie.

2 Chronicles 20:20 b (KJV)
20 … Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.
Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 (KJV)
13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.
