LOFTY AND HIGH MOUNTAIN

Greetings dear and precious saints, the redeemed of the Lord and welcome back to our study of the Bible Book of Isaiah. Please take a moment and share this and every teaching as widely as possible by every means available to you. The featured picture today is provided by our good friend and faithful man of God, Joe Getchell Jr. This picture is of a foggy late fall, early winter day. Thank you, Joe, for your beautiful pictures. Now, let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text for today and read it out loud. Yes, out loud, you know why.
Isaiah 57:6-9 (KJV)
6 Among the smooth stones of the stream is thy portion; they, they are thy lot: even to them hast thou poured a drink offering, thou hast offered a meat offering. Should I receive comfort in these?
7 Upon a lofty and high mountain hast thou set thy bed: even thither wentest thou up to offer sacrifice.
8 Behind the doors also and the posts hast thou set up thy remembrance: for thou hast discovered thyself to another than me, and art gone up; thou hast enlarged thy bed, and made thee a covenant with them; thou lovedst their bed where thou sawest it.
9 And thou wentest to the king with ointment, and didst increase thy perfumes, and didst send thy messengers far off, and didst debase thyself even unto hell.
As the Lord speaks to the tormentors of His people, He makes it clear that He has seen their turn to idols and to the arm of the flesh. He also makes it clear that this is a certain road to Hell. Our God is so good, He warns all peoples. Why do we willfully go our own way so often, saint and sinner alike? We are so blessed to have the written Word of God that many in ancient times did not have. Yet we still walk into deception in ignorance, in lust of the flesh, the eye, or pride of life. Sometimes we just plain exercise outright rebellion.
We are not victims, we are fully equipped to overcome the world, the enemy with ease. However, we must study the Word, we must filter all things through the Word, through our conscious, the inner voice of the Holy Spirit, and even be willing to receive counsel from more mature Christians. A more mature Christian is not necessarily one who has been saved longer or most visible at Church, but the one you have seen handle attacks of the enemy in peace with confidence. Our Lord is so good and if we will allow Him, He will connect us to the right people. Keep in mind it may not be the people you wanted but it will be the right people. Now, let’s move ahead a little in Scripture using the NIV.
Isaiah 57:9-13 (NIV)
9 You went to Molech with olive oil and increased your perfumes. You sent your ambassadors far away; you descended to the grave itself!
10 You were wearied by all your ways, but you would not say, ‘It is hopeless.’ You found renewal of your strength, and so you did not faint.
11 “Whom have you so dreaded and feared that you have been false to me, and have neither remembered me nor pondered this in your hearts? Is it not because I have long been silent that you do not fear me?
12 I will expose your righteousness and your works, and they will not benefit you.
13 When you cry out for help, let your collection [of idols] save you! The wind will carry all of them off, a mere breath will blow them away. But the man who makes me his refuge will inherit the land and possess my holy mountain.”
Little ones this not just for an ancient people, this applies to us, the Church, today. Why do we suppose things are such a mess all around us? God asks a very pertinent question to this rebellious peoples in verse eleven. He asks, who did you fear more than me? Again, the Lord is mocking this rebellious people who turned from Him to idols, even Molech burning their kids alive. This mocking goes into verse thirteen when He says, “let your collection [of idols] save you” in your trouble. Then here comes the invincible and certain wind of hope. “But the man who makes me his refuge will inherit the land and possess my holy mountain”. Doesn’t sound a whole lot better than powerless idols and the road to Hell?
Lord willing, I will pick up right here tomorrow, remember, the Lord is good, His promises are certain by faith in love, and He cannot lie.

2 Chronicles 20:20 b (KJV)
20 … Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.
Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 (KJV)
13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.
