THE BLOOD COVENANT – PART TWO

John 19:30 (KJV)
30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
The New Blood Covenant which started some two-thousand years earlier with Abram/Abraham was now a confirmed, a finished reality for all eternity. All who would receive the sacrifice of Jesus making Him Lord and Savior would have all restored in Him, again sons of God. Christ Jesus is King of kings, He is our commander, at His leadership we enforce the defeat of the demonic forces and the curse. An example would be the calming of the storm at sea or the release of healing power wherever faith is found. In other words, situations where we would issue a command, a decree, a declaration as kings in the earth. We are not the army of the Lord we are commanders; the angels and the Holy Spirit are the army of the Lord. Jesus as Savior brings us into the Kingdom of God and into the Blood Covenant. Jesus as our High Priest is the mediator of this new covenant. He stands before the Father and confirms we have met our obligations and are entitled to the benefits of the covenant.
Hebrews 12:22-24 (KJV)
22 But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,
23 To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,
24 And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.
Wow, we have already come, from the moment of salvation, to the Heavenly Jerusalem. The Apostle Paul spoke of this in Ephesians 2:6 as well, our spirit man can be in two perhaps more than two places at once and soon this physical man will have extraordinary realities as well. Jesus is the firstborn of many brethren and I am of that company. We see in the latter part of verse twenty-three that we have joined other spirits in Heaven as well. We are presently unaware of this present reality due to the opacity caused by this flesh.
In modern culture when two parties enter into an agreement they both sign a contract or covenant which lays out the benefits and obligations of each party and even the consequences of violating the covenant. In ancient cultures the strongest possible covenant was a blood covenant and the parties to the covenant would bear some sort of marks on their bodies that others could see. In addition, particularly the weaker party may be given something of the stronger party to signal that they were in mutual defense covenant. The object would warn would be attackers that there is a much more powerful force behind their target. When the Father sees us or the devils see us they see Jesus and all that He is for we are in Christ Jesus. They see the nail scared hands and feet as well are the scar in His side, they see the sprinkling of His Blood and they see the earnest or seal of the Holy Spirit upon us. None of the protections or benefits happen automatically, we are freewill persons and must exercise our obligations under the Covenant to reap the benefits. Jesus watches over us to perform the Covenant. Before I finish for today let’s start looking at ten components of Blood Covenant which I have abstracted from E. W. Kenyon’s book on The Blood Covenant. As I proceed through each of the ten components of a Blood Covenant I will show the Scriptural connections as well.
- In a blood covenant a weaker party covenants with a stronger party. I think we can all agree that God is certainly the stronger party.
Colossians 1:16 (KJV)
16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
- The blood covenant establishes equality between the parties. In many places Scripture declares that we are the sons of God. By faith Abraham pleased God (Hebrews 11:6) and God called him His friend. Because we are sons we are heirs, joint-heirs with Jesus.
1 John 3:1 (KJV)
1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
James 2:23 (KJV)
23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
Romans 8:15-17 (KJV)
15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
Remember the word ‘adoption’ in verse fifteen means to be made a son, a son with the same standing as a first-born son. The first-born son is the one entitled to the Father’s Blessing and the double portion. I will pickup next Sunday with the remaining eight components of Blood Covenant.
