Greetings dear and precious saints of God, coheirs with Christ Jesus, kings and priests in the Kingdom of God forever and ever. Welcome back to this instructive and empowering Bible Study of the Book of Haggai. Now, let’s turn to our primary Bible text reading out loud.
Haggai 2:10-14 (KJV)
10 In the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying,
11 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Ask now the priests concerning the law, saying,
12 If one bear holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any meat, shall it be holy? And the priests answered and said, No.
13 Then said Haggai, If one that is unclean by a dead body touch any of these, shall it be unclean? And the priests answered and said, It shall be unclean.
14 Then answered Haggai, and said, So is this people, and so is this nation before me, saith the LORD; and so is every work of their hands; and that which they offer there is unclean.
Does this sound like what you would expect the Lord to say if His people were walking according to His Word? How do you think they are doing with the rebuilding of the Temple? Before we go on to that I want to go back and say a personal word about the following verse.
Haggai 2:9 (KJV)
9 The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts.
Some months after my late wife Patti moved to Heaven but before I met Donna the Lord brought this verse to me. My first reaction was “how can that be”. The things that Patti and I accomplished in our time together was amazing and now God is saying that my best days, better days are ahead. Let me tell you He is fulfilling His Word, day by day. Final word concerning this. Kingdom of God people are not to peak and then decline until they pass. Kingdom of God people are to never peak in this life or ever. Now, back to Haggai.
It has been about two months since the Lord spoke to His people through His Prophet Haggai. One might think our primary Bible verses only apply to the food Laws of God but think again. He is talking about mixing the holy with the unholy. What about you and I in our homes, in the market places, and in our Churches? Let’s look at verses twelve and thirteen in the Message Bible and think about how all of this may apply personally.
Haggai 2:12-13 (MSG)
12 If someone carries a piece of sacred meat in his pocket, meat that is set apart for sacrifice on the altar, and the pocket touches a loaf of bread, a dish of stew, a bottle of wine or oil, or any other food, will these foods be made holy by such contact?” The priests said, “No.”
13 Then Haggai said, “How about someone who is contaminated by touching a corpse—if that person touches one of these foods, will it be contaminated?” The priests said, “Yes, it will be contaminated.”
Let’s listen to verse fourteen and continue are self-examination. Let us think about the shows we watch, the things we read, the thoughts we think, and the words/conversations we have.
Haggai 2:14 (KJV)
14 Then answered Haggai, and said, So is this people, and so is this nation before me, saith the LORD; and so is every work of their hands; and that which they offer there is unclean.
