WHAT ABOUT TONGUES? – PART THREE

Greetings dear ones and welcome back to our Sunday Bible Study continuing to focus on the topic of speaking in tongues. We have a long way to go, but I believe if you will stick with it, the Lord will bring lots of clarity. I presented the following Scripture two weeks ago and last week because it tells us a lot about the coming of “tongues” to the people of God and how God speaks to His people. Tongues is one way that God speaks to His people but it is not the primary way. The preeminent (foremost) way is through knowledge and that comes from Holy Scripture. Again, read the following passage slowly, prayerfully, and carefully.

Isaiah 28:9-13 (KJV)

9 Whom shall he teach knowledge? And whom shall he make to understand doctrine? Them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.

10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:

11 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.

12 To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.

13 But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

Right off the bat we are told that being taught knowledge is essential. This not just information but it is information received with an ear to hear. This means we listen intently to understand and to implement in our lives, thus it becomes revelation (rhema, light). We are not to baby those we are to disciple for it is imperative they move from milk to meat quickly to be productive in the Kingdom of God. Now I want us all to notice a critical phrase “This is the rest” in verse twelve. This is not talking about taking a nap. How do we enter into God’s rest, His provision? We enter by knowing and living the Word of God and exercising the gift of tongues (not one of the nine gifts in 1 Cor 12) that comes with the baptism of the Holy Spirit. How does this bring rest?

2 Peter 1:2-4 (KJV)

2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,

3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

Did you read this passage carefully, with ears to hear? Did you see the essential role of knowledge? Did you see that by knowledge we know and believe we have already been given all things for this natural life and spiritual life. Looking back to the Isaiah Scripture remember that part of this knowledge came by tongues. Now the following passage will have more life.

Galatians 3:13-14 (KJV)

13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

We dear ones have the natural blessing of Abraham and we have the spiritual blessing that came through Jesus Christ by faith.

TAKE HOME

The gaining of Bible Knowledge is essential, not just knowing but doing.
Speaking in tongues is another avenue for uncovering mysteries but not a substitute of study.
God has already given us all things natural and spiritual.

Lord willing, I will pick up right here next Sunday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
